Gynecologists ask if you are sexually active.  I have never heard of a surgeon asking that question unless it is related to the reproductive organs.  As far as pregnancies are concerned I still get the heavy apron/bib put on me when I have x-rays taken at my dentist.  I don't understand why I need the protective covering.  I am past the age of pregnancy.  Even if I wanted to be like grandma I couldn't because there is no uterus.

@lgfan The heavy lead apron at the dentist is used to protect your vital organs from "scatter radiation".

As far as the xray machines they are quite safe generally but there is a small percentage of radiation dispersed from them.

Re: Very weird doctor question

Funny--I was asked those questions as a check- in, a couple days ago, for a video appointment with the dr I am seeing about my insomnia---been around for years where I am.

My Primary Doctor has me fill out a questionnaire every year.

They give you the questionaire as soon as you arrive and it must be filled out in it's entirety before the Doctor will see you.

It seems like every year, more questions are added. They are now probing alot of mental issues, living arrangements and activities in addition to your sexual habits.

What you are describing appears to me the Medicare Wellness test.  The government put this test out there and Medicare pays a large fee to the doctor's to give this test.

I think when I am given the test this spring, I will say I am afraid to be be alone in my house and don't feel safe, I am having financial difficulties and I don't have enough food and I fall down a lot.

What is the doctor going to do with this info?  It's a waste of tax dollars.

My cognitive abilities are just fine, but maybe I will go to the appointment with two different shoes on the wrong feet and unmatched socks and with my shirt and pants on backwards. (sarcasm)

Priceless comment.

I would not have the nerve to do that BUT wish I did.

I would be afraid that if I did, I would have visitors at my house to survey my living conditions and contents of my house and I would be subjected to countless testing for years to come.

Re: Very weird doctor question

It might be a “waste of time” in most cases, but not always.

I once answered “yes” to some of the depression questions and my doc discussed it with me.

It part of the standard form, regardless of the reason for the visit.

Not every question asked has to be answered.

All fun and games until it becomes a permanent part of your health chart and good luck getting it removed...

I have an appointment tomorrow morning with a general surgeon.  This practice was recommended by my PCP and they are all in the same health system.

I have two Pilar cysts on my scalp that need removed.  I have had maybe 18 to 20 removed in my lifetime, so this isn't my first rodeo.

The doctor who removed them in the past is now deceased, so I need a new doctor.

I got a request to "check in" for my appointment today.  This is common and I do it all of the time.  The check in asked about insurance and if I have been out of the county and if I take any meds.   All standard stuff...same questions as always asked during the check in.

This time there was a question asking if I was sexually active.  I tried to skip the question, but it wouldn't allow me to.  Then it asked if my preferred partner/s were male or female or both.

Let's just say I was taken aback.  I don't understand why these questions were needed and if they are needed for some surgeries why the question wasn't asked in the office.

Scheech....all this to have cysts removed from my scalp.  I can't wait to hear the doctor's answer when I confront him.  I feel it is an unnecessary and invasive question to ask on a routine " check in" on line.

Anyone else run into this?

Maybe it's to gather statistics on how peope of all sexual/gender persuasions are treated.  We keep hearing that certain populations are slighted - maybe this is an effort  to fix that.

Re: Very weird doctor question

I have never seen that question for gen surgery.  I have seen it in gyn.  I suppose it's to assess the possibility of a venereal disease.  I would object to the question but there should be an option for "decline to Answer" or "irrelevant".  Forcing an answer feels wrong to me.

I would think if you are having surgery, one of the reasons for asking that question could be to make sure if you are having sex with either multiple partners or same sex that you don't have HIV or AIDs; the hospital personnel want to take the correct measures when dealing with blood.

They do that anyway and have been for decades.
