Re: Very weird doctor question

I encounter this question when I check into a Mercy Hospital facility. I left it blank only to be confronted by a nurse at my annual wellness check asking me if I use birth control.....I am 74 years old!

Re: Very weird doctor question

[ Edited ]

I saw a new (to me) dermatologist a few weeks ago.  Naturally, I had to fill out pages of forms.  Those questions were included. In addition to wanting to know if I am sexually active, I was asked how many partners I have and whether or not they are of the same sex as me.   I don't even think my primary doctor has the answer to those questions, haha, but if my derm wants to ask, I don't mind answering.

They also asked what my pronouns are.  Everyone's so concerned with being PC.

I always found it odd that they would ask about your level of education.  Not sure what that has to do with anything.

Edited to add:  They didn't ask what my pronouns are, but what pronouns I prefer to be used.

Re: Very weird doctor question

I’m surprised you’re surprised?

It has been part of intake and pt history for years and impacts risk factors for specific diseases.

Exactly.  They need to know if you partake in what they consider risky behavior (not wearing a seatbelt, taking drugs, multiple sexual partners).  I don't know why some people get so indignant about answering these questions.

Re: Very weird doctor question

My mother, now deceased, you to say...."it's a different world"....now I am saying the same thing.  I enjoyed reading comments here and found some amusing especially as some of us are now older.

@Carmie .... I have only been asked that question by my gynecologist and understood.  But, have not had it asked on forms by any other doctors.  If so, I would wait until they ask me in person and then ask "why is that information necessary?".  I think they are getting a little carried away with personal information.....only if it is important for treating my problem.  They claim everything is private but in the world of the internet I wonder!

Re: Very weird doctor question

When I can, I ask a question back: "What do you mean-active?"

I did that in an oral interview at Medicare Wellness and the nurse said we will just leave it blank.

In this case the question was digital and would not allow a blank.

Risky behaviors?  How would that impact a removal of a cyst on my scalp.  And, if that is what they were looking for, why didn't they ask how many partners I have been with, etc?

There is not much info you can gather asking the two questions...are you STILL sexually active....are your partner/s...male, female or both.

Having a relationship with someone is not risky behavior.

I am 100% going to question the doctor tomorrow. I want to know exactly why these questions are being asked.  I have a right to know.

This was not asked on an intake form or with my medical  history.  It was during a reminder for my appointment.  There were no other questions asked...not even what my visit is for.

How would you feel if you were asked these questions during a reminder for your appointment?  These questions have nothing to do with my issue or problem.

Gee, I hope my doctor doesn't participate in risky behavior like having sex with his wife or partner. I think since he is going to do surgery on me, I have to know....

I seem to recall reading somewhere that sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in the U.S., so I don't think this was a very weird question.

Last year my Rheumatologist was prescribing a med for me and first I had to get a blood test to confirm I don't have tuberculosis.   (This was a new one for me).

As for "check ins" online ... unless this would be a new MD or practice, I never fill them out, and it doesn't seem to matter when I arrive.  lol

@Tinkrbl44  I'm on Humira so I need to be checked annually for my refills a tuberculosis blood test .  It seems many meds do require it .  I also never do the online check in and it never matters when I arrive either .

If they ask questions & won't let you skip them I would pass on the form. I would tell them that there are questions on the form that are none of their business. I see no reason why they need an answer for those questions? Has nothing to do with your surgery?

I had a form that asked if I still had sex. I left it blank. The nurse asked me the question since I didn't answer it. I told her it was none of their ****** business.

Depending on what kind of doctor you are seeing them knowing if you still have sex is important.  If it is a urologist or gynecologist you are seeing being sexually active can affect your health.  You can get UTI's or STD's.

that  definitely makes sense ,  I certainly wouldn't my ophthalmologist asking that question 😂
