I have only gone to Ophthalmologists ever.  Always had the best care.

Not long ago my general dermatologist biopsied and treated what she thought was a precancerous skin lesion. She referred me to a Mohs surgeon. When the surgeon took a look, he said it did not need surgery but rather a strong shot of Kenalog. 

 

So I could get mad and blast the general derm for over-referral or just be glad that the general dermatologist wanted a second opinion about my condition.

 

We have established that an Optometrist is not a medical doctor. So it is just logical that he/she would ask for a consult if a condition is noticed that is not treated by the optometrist. 

 

Primary medical care is provided by many professions that are not medical degreed doctors. They are all supposed to work together for the best care of patients. 

 

As far as the photos not being the same as a dilated exam, we all should get ready for many medical test being directed by AI. Studies show that computers are better at detecting skin cancers than the human eye.
