I'm kind of surprised your doctor didn't give you a 'scrip for physical therapy. I would definitely recommend PT for appropriate treatment and home exercises you can do.

Before you attempt exercises that might make your problem worse, you should have your shoulders examined by a doctor who can then prescribe appropriate treatment.
In the meantime, use a heating pad and Tylenol for the pain. If you need to move around and can't be tied to a heating pad all day, over the counter "Thermacare Heat Wraps for Neck and Shoulders" found in pharmacy departments work very well.

A couple of questions.
Your age and overall health condition.
If you are able to do weights, my suggestion is to try the lat pull down and lat fly machine at the gym.
Sometimes we have to push ourselves a little.
You may need strength building in your muscles.
If this suggestion is not appropriate for your needs, please disregard.

@Brisky the LightStim really helped me when I recently strained some leg muscles. I was having trouble walking and moving around. It took a few days and multiple sessions but I think it worked. The lights are warm and soothing.
