For those interested an update on my second knee surgery - maycoplasty - the newest thing in the realm of mini operations.
I saw the doctor for the first time today and much became more clear to me - as some of you know my first knee went very smoothly and fairly painlessly but I have been having issues with this second one. Bleeding at the hospital and since I have been home and much more swelling and pain than the first one. Today i am 2 weeks post op - my leg is still bruised from mid thigh to mid calf - though it has turned from black and purple to green so it is healing. The doctor did say that there was a lot of bleeding during the surgery and they did have to give me platelets and blood in the OR - so that explains the bruising. He also said that because there is alot of blood in the tissues around the joint that puts pressure on the surgical area and is likely what is causing the increased pain.I asked why he didn't put in a drain and he said he has had some very bad experiences with drains and he doesn't use them. I have had old bloody looking drainage for 2 weeks now from the wound and I now understand why. So - bleeding aside it is doing well. The x rays are good and I will start outpatient PT Thursday for 3 weeks. At that time he said he expects to be able to let me go back to water aerobics and a month later I can resume using the gym.
The doctor was also telling me that they are now starting to use the makoplasty to resurface HIPS - I hope I am not the one who will be telling you all my experience with that! So far my hips are unaffected by this awful arthritis.
so - again -if you are looking at possible new knees - first look into maykoplasty and ask your doctor about it. So much simpler than TKR -but you can't put it off you have to do it early before too much damage is done to the knee structure.
