Re: Type 1 and Type 2 D Favorite Diabetes Recipes ~ For Breakfast Lunch Dinner

@stargazergal,

Per my husbands doctor at the VA, Vietnam veterans have the highest rates for diabetes and heart disease of any other group of veterans who have served our country.  The MRE's delivered to the vets in Vietnam were made up specifically to fortify the soldiers in the jungle environment.   Over 40 years later, the VA is treating many veterans like my husband who have very significant health problems.

Diabetes and heart disease go hand in hand, and diabetes was a huge factor in my husbands heart attack.  Prior to his MI, my husbands diabetes was thought to be well controlled, he had great  numbers on paper, but it still resulted in a major heart attack, that most people do not survive.   My husband has a percentage of heart damage that is permanent, since damaged heart muscle does not regenerate.

Diabetes has a major affect on the circulatory system, which results in neuropathy.  After 20 years, my husbands neuropathy has progressed to another condition, PAD, or peripheral artery disease, which means he has restricted blood flow in the arteries his legs.  My husband has to be very careful as far as injuries; he is not allowed to cut his own nails, but goes to the VA to have them filed down by the podiatry nurse.   He wears special diabetic socks, and has to order very wide shoes to protect his feet.

I have watched my husbands diabetes progress significantly over the last 20 years, all while under the care of very competent doctors and specialists.   Thank you for your interest and best wishes.   My best to your son in law with his diabetic health.

@sidsmom,

What you know about diabetes thru the references you site, and what I know first hand from helping someone with advanced, and progressive diabetes, are miles apart.   The assumptions you make about my husbands condition are wrong.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and I just cringe at the opinions of this particular poster. I live this disease day in and day out and kind-of get perturbed when someone (that just reads in a book) boasts how they know how to control diabetes. Woman Happy

My posts have always been very clear I was talking about reversing Type 2 diabetes.  I would think anyone having a strong opinion about a particular poster would have realized that important fact.  It's not just my 'opinion'...millions & millions of people who eat this way can't be wrong.  Type 2 diabetes is a modern day illness with a very basic, easy solution.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes five days ago. I wish I had information, but I don't. I got a letter typed in all caps from my Dr. that said, "You have Diabetes!" Nothing else for information. My DH and I have been rsearching on the net for hours and hours every day. We have found many ads but little information for meals. I wish I could help; I am desperate for help too.

Maybe someone who is familiar with carb counting and meals will help.

Thanks you for bring this to the attention of the board.

*****************

The only symptom I had is being overweight. I have bloodwork done every six months to get meds refilled. I had no idea and have no family history of diabetes. When DH and I went for bloodwork, I had not gained any weight, but still overweight. Dr. never told me I should lose. I had normal bloodwork for everything else.

Yes. I was totally shocked when I got a note---not even a phone call to ask me to come in and discuss what I need to do. Thus, DH and I are trying to manage everything and can't find much. Dr.'s note said see her in three months. That's it from her. I imagine she will send me to an endocrinologist; maybe he will know.

I have put myself on a 1200 calorie diet of less than 40 carbs a day. I have lost 10 pounds in ten days. I think I'm on the right track. But I haven't found anything to verify this.

Very scary.

@teainlondon

I urge you to relax a bit over your diabetes diagnosis.   I understand making healthier changes to your diet for both the diabetes, and weight loss, but I think losing a pound a day is extreme.   Losing weight too fast is not necessarily a good thing, and can result in a chemical imbalance.

If you are having trouble figuring out your meals, seek help thru the Education department of your local hospital.   They usually have a Diabetes Educator on staff who meets with all inpatients who have been diagnosed with diabetes.   This person works to educate new diabetics, and usually teaches classes for the community about diabetic education.   Part of the patient education process includes meeting with a dietitian to help with food choices.  These teaching services are not limited to patients in the hospital, but you have to call and request help.

My take on your letter from the doctor is that you have had a fasting blood sugar of 120 or more, and the letter was notification that you have reached this level, which qualifies as a diabetes diagnosis.   Since you did not receive explicit instructions, and are not scheduled to see the doctor again for 3 months, I suspect your fasting blood sugar was elevated, but not abnormally high.   Therefore, a more reasonable approach would be to start with a review of the foods you eat and trying to reduce your intake of starchy carbs, sugars, and bad fats, to see what improvements you can make before seeing the doctor again.

Wishing you the best with your diabetic journey.

Re: Type 1 and Type 2 D Favorite Diabetes Recipes ~ For Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Both my ex and youngest daughter have type 1 diabetes. At that time the type and amount of food was regulated. I bought diabetic cookbooks and followed the guildelines. I did find with both of them that fat was the biggest culprit, like too many peanuts and chips. Also, timing of the meals was paid attention to. Anyway my daughter is now 37, diagnosed at 9, and has no negatives consequences. My ex is 70, diagnosed at 36, and to tell the truth all I know is that he is still alive.

Things have changed how disabetes is regulated these days. I can say if I get disabetes I will treat it like I did my daughter and ex. It is work, but once you get the hang of it, it is OK.
