I have been dealing with this for about 2 months now. Mostly a problem when going up stairs...been told to ice a few times daily ( which I fail to do...and light message)
I have been considering trying acupucture to help treat this. My chiropractor said it can take some time to clear up.

I don't have this, but have read about it many times on the site bonesmart....it is a common ailment on the forums, where an orthopedic nurse of over 50 years offers much advice. Icing is terrifiic. Overdoing exercise is a common cause, so resting is important.

I would certainly follow the ice instructions before I would pursue acupuncture.

Not icing is a mistake. Most any type of inflammation can be helped by doing this, some the more often, the better. Like any inflammation, if one is able, taking an anti-inflammatory can help.
Being overweight puts a strain on all the body joint structures, moreso the weight bearing ones. Strengthening all surrounding muscles and adding more flexibility to them, and all connective tissues, can also help prevent these types of inflammation. Never do these things when there is inflammation in, or around any joint.
Like any weight bearing joint, when inflamed, patience along with all the treatments is a good thing. Way too many seem to forget to maintain the exercises that help protect all major weight bearing joints, once their pain diminishes or is completely gone. That is unfortunate, but more common than not.
Wishing you well,

I have never heard of that. Sorry you are going through this as I'm sure it's painful. My sister gets bursitis. She had it in her wrist over the Holidays. She was not able to bake all the Holiday goodies or Christmas dinner. She could not pick up the pots, pans or do any mixing by hand. What little she did get done she had to have her DH help out. My dad used to get bursitis.
You could try one of those Thermi-Paq hot cold packs. It's clay based & has a Velcro strap that you can wrap around your leg/knee if that's where you have the bursitis to keep it in place. Put in the freezer or microwave depending on if you want cold or hot. I have 2 of them in the freezer.
The clay pack is removable so the outer cover can be washed.

@bargainsgirl Follow your physicians instructions and ice, ice, ice. Bursitis takes time to heal. Be patient. And, please don't try acupucture! If you have questions, consult your physician.

Oh ya I have had this....so painful! Couldn't sleep or get in any comfortable spot....just so painful constantly. Do the icing...and if you can try some OTC Advil. THat's all I could handle for a short period. Time and cold packs and finally my hip got better. I did go in to see my doctor plus PT....it still took a long time to stop that awful pain.

Why would you see a chiropractor for a hip condition? If your chiro said ice it twice a day, why wouldn't you do it? Yeah, odd. It's your hip, so unless you have very long arms, how could you massage it yourself? It's not uncommon, the remedies are always PT, naproxen or ibuprophen, steroid injections if those things don't work. If all that doesn't help, there are surgical options. Like I said, this is something common. I see it all the time.

There are some YT videos by Athena Jezick who is an LMT and some highlight this issue.
ITA that a good massage therapist is worth every penny. As far as ice, unless it's a deep bruise I can't tolerate the intense cold.

I had this after both of my knee replacements. Specific stretches and exercises by a physical therapist followed by icing cleared both cases in less than a month. They were nasty, too.
My orthopedic (knee) surgeon diagnosed it, wrote the Rx for PT and Iwas on my way.
