Transient Global Amnesia, say what???

I'm interested to know if anyone has had any experience with TGA, Transcient Global Amnesia, or knows of someone who has? And the circumstances surrounding its onset. The affected person loses their short-term memory for approximately 24 hours, can be stress-related or, in my father-in-law's case, most likely triggered by a dermatology procedure involving a type of black light treatment for skin cancer on his forehead. Within 24 hours he was completely back to normal. (The ordeal began when I called him later the day of his procedure to ask how it went, and he had NO idea what I was talking about, and said he was confused bc nothing was familiar to him as he looked around his house! My husband raced him to the ER thinking it was a stroke. They admitted him, ran every test imaginable, concluded no stroke, no heart attack, nothing except numbers that were off the charts GREAT for a man in his fifties, let alone 84! A neurologist working closely with his doctors made the diagnosis of TGA.)

Re: Transient Global Amnesia, say what???

I have a close friend who had it years ago. She was on vacation and it happened after she had a swim in the ocean. Whether that had anything to do with the event is unknown. She was checked out after she got home and all was well. It never happened again.

Wow, I never heard of that.  Thanks for telling us about it in case we every encounter such a situation.  That would be really scary if you were alone with no one to help you!

Re: Transient Global Amnesia, say what???

Yes, my mother had this about 2 years ago. Scariest thing ever. Her and my dad were getting ready to go to the airport to see me and about an hour befoe they were to take off, my dad called me and told me something was wrong with my mom and explained that she was getting ready to take a shower and kept asking where they were going. She was really scared. I told my dad to take her to the ER immediately (I was stupid- he should have called the ambulance actually in case it was a stroke!! I wasn't thinking correctly). My sister came and visited her in the hospital and she kept asking her the same questions. We were all really scared, as was my mom who knew something was wrong.

Anyway, long story short, within about 24 hours, she was back to normal but still to this day cannot remember much about that day. I will tell you, it was super scary. All tests were normal and neurologist and other specialists diagnosed her with TGA. What a crazy thing.

Re: Transient Global Amnesia, say what???

It happened to my bff at Walmart. We were shopping through the store and all of the sudden I turned around and my friend was gone. I tried to call her on her cell but no answer. I immediately contacted the store manager to try and locate her. They saw her on the security monitors and she appeared confused. When I caught up to her she kept asking me where she was. She had absolutely no idea where we were. Took her to the hospital and they kept her for three days of observation  then discharged her with TGA. Very scarey!

Thank you all for your responses! I wouldn't wish this on anyone, though the outcome is awesome, the beginning is so scary. But it is always good to know you're not alone.😊

Re: Transient Global Amnesia, say what???

I had it happen to me in May of this year. I was going for a 2 and a half hour drive to housesit for my sis and bro in law for a few days. I have no recollection of leaving the house or the entire drive, and I was so lucky that an observant neighbor noticed I left my garage door open and called me, which I don't remember, and contacted my in laws. They found me a few miles from where they live. I was on my way to their old house they moved from over 3 years ago. I had my dogs with me, I didn't know where I was, what I was there for, and I drove the whole trip in total blackout They took me to the ER and I was admitted and didn't come back to myself until 11 pm that night, over 12 hours since I had left home. I had many tests done and was in the hospital for 2 days. My diagnosis was TGA. The neurologist told me they don't know exactly what causes it and that it usually never happens again, and that I will never remember that day. It is the most bizarre and unnerving thing that has ever happened to me. I have done some research and I believe the sleeping pills I have been taking that have doxalymine in them is the cause. I read a report that several drugs used in over the counter meds for sleeping have been linked to early onset dementia and short term memory loss. Why it happened that particular day is beyond me, but I am so grateful that I had family and alert neighbors to track me down and that I didn't have something really bad happen. I have stopped taking anything with certain drugs in them, and use only melatonin for sleep aid now. You can find some videos on U tube of people in hospital with TGA and they're actually kind of funny to watch, especially if you have been there yourself.
