If they irritated the nerve during the drilling, it can take many weeks for it to calm down. This happened to me once, and it took6 weeks, but did go away.
If you trust this dentist, give it a little more time, or if not, do get another opinion.

I had a similar situation. A crown was loosened during a cleaning. My dentist took it off and when x-rays showed no sign of decay, returned the cap to the tooth. For 2 weeks I was in pain. The dentist did a little filing and some tap, tap tap. Result, no pain!

I'd say under the filling there's a sensitive root that is being irritated. I too would get a 2nd opinion, that is not normal. Pain is not normal.

@NicksmomESQ So sorry to hear you're having such discomfort. I was a dental assistant for 30 years and yes, this is quite common though not everyone experiences it. Sometimes the teeth get extremely sensitive after a restoration and it can take weeks or months for the nerve to recover. We used to recommend advil (if you are not sensitive to aspirin) as it is an anti inflammatory. That generally takes the edge off. PLEASE do not wait until a cavity hurts you as this will most likely mean you will need a root canal. Tooth decay spreads over time and eventually will infect the nerve. I hope you feel better soon.

Get some oil of cloves at the pharmacy, and rub that on your tooth and gums. It is supposed to stop tooth pain

There must be something wrong. You may have an infection or need a root canal . You should see an endo dontist or get an appointment with another dentist , It should not sti hurt. Maybe the novicaine shot injured a nerve.

I would see another dentist & have it checked. If you dentist thinks it's ok to have pain after a filling I would find another dentist anyways. Something is going on or you would not be in pain. ITA even the slightest amount off on your bite will cause pain.
When I had a tooth prepped for crown it hurt to bite down. Went back to the dentist & he smoothed a tiny area that took about 2 seconds. No more pain.

I was told that after the novocaine wore off everything would be fine.Well that’s not what happened. I ended up being in horrible pain for 2 weeks.I went back to the dentist & she said everything in my mouth looked fine ,no infection. She said it was normal for some people to have pain & sensitivity after a filling!! She advised me to use ice & Advil. She said it could last weeks or months!!
Here I am 5 weeks in & I’m still in discomfort. It’s healing very slowly!!
I never had a toothache before the cavity was filled!! Has anyone ever experienced this?? My DH said he never heard of this happening.
So sorry you are in such pain! This doesn't sound right. You had a-pain free cavity filled and you're still in pain 5 weeks later??!!?? My dentist recently filled a tooth and cracked it in the process. I ended up having an infection and a root canal by a specialist that took two visits. I now have a front tooth that could "go" at any minute. I'm hestitating to get an implant. It sounds like you need to see another dentist to check for a crack.

One thing I’ve learned is that if I ever have another cavity I will wait for it to bother me before I have it filled. I lost 4lbs over the last 5 weeks because of the discomfort.
@NicksmomESQ Sorry you are suffering so. I have had my share of root canals so I understand tooth ache! I recommend you see an endodontist. They specialize in finding out why a tooth hurts.
And In the future, Do not wait for a tooth to bother you once a cavity is found. You will most likely need a root canal as pain from a cavity usually means the tooth is dying . It is too late to fix it. You need to stop the cavity BEFORE it gets to the nerve of the tooth( a toothache).
