Re: To poster who had a bad reaction to Lisinopril (a bad cough)

Just started taking Lispinopril three weeks ago and couldn't stop coughing. Went back to the doctor and he switched me to Losartan a few days ago and I am happy to say I no longer have a cough.

Lisinopril is not a beta-blocker. It is an ace-inhibitor.

Not everyone can ""get used to"" -pril- family drugs because of the cough. Be sure to let your doctor know ASAP if you are coughing. The cough can start immediately after beginning them or later into the course of treatment.

Yes, my doctor warned me about the possibility of the "lisinopril cough" when she prescribed this medication. Fortunately, I haven't had the problem, but chronic coughing is a common and annoying side effect of this medication for some people. Your doctor should be able to change your medication and get rid of the cough.

The cough is a well known side effect. I know three people in the last few months that have had to be taken off this med for that exact reason I just hope you don't get the side effect that I developed from lisinopril. It was medically induced Lupus. And yes it was verified by my doctor and documented. As soon as I saw the butterfly rash I knew and went screaming to my doctor. It caused my sister to break out in big splotches all over her body. We are one in three million that get the rare reaction. Don't just read the little papers they give you with the meds. Go on WebMD and see all the reactions that have been reported. After the main page there is a little what side effects are there. Check them out. You will be amazed and in some cases scared.

My doctor took me off of Lisinopril because I developed a cough. The incessant coughing went away.

That cough is bad news. My DH was on Lisinopril and had the dry cough constantly. He must take medication to reduce his BP which is controlled - but he is a "lifer" - so he has tried almost everything. DH's daughter is an RN and when he told her about the cough she insisted he stop. He switched to Losartin. With Lisinopril, The ACE enzymes can affect the lungs, when ACE is blocked, substances can build up in the lungs. I got my Mom to stop taking it too because she had the cough as well and from what my stepdaughter told us it can affect women's lungs more than men.

Ed.: DH's doctor wrote a new script for him for the Losartin, when he said he wanted off the Lisinopril. No concern at all, just "hmm Lisinopril, it shouldn't be a problem". This is a cardiologist affiliated with MGH Boston! Sometimes nurses are more in tune with medications than doctors.

I use WebMD a lot, and Mayo Clinic, and Wikipedia. I also read the entire pharmaceutical insert, as I always do (need a magnifying glass). I was starting to think lupus too. Was your lupus reversed when you stopped the med?

I have a 4 PM appt. today with my GP. My throat is very sore, the rash is still there (which obviously I won't attempt to cover with makeup despite my ever present ego). I'm pretty sure it's the Lisinopril that has been causing this chronic sore throat, coughing, and rash. I'm hopeful that what she prescribes instead won't just cause different side effects as I realize I do need to be on a BP med. Whatever she prescribes, I will do a thorough search on it as well, as I always do. I will ask her what the side effects are and will probably get the usual, "this and that, but very, very rare" krap I always get. Doesn't matter, as I always do my own research anyway. Don't know how the Lisinopril side effects got away from me. I think it's because they took a long time to show up.

I just got back on and saw your question or response. I cannot take any ace inhibitor any longer but it is disappointing as they work the best since I am diabetic also. One doctor thought she knew better and prescribed another saying if I did not take one I could have a stroke. I think it was Ramipril. The pharmacist tried to talk me out of it and being scared I took it. Well, one week later guess what popped up? Raynauds syndrome. Three years ago I ended up having a four way bypass and the surgeons put me on Metoprolol. So far no problems but the list of side effects is awful. I have tried every way possible to control my BP but so far no luck so I take the medicine. As for the lupus, I don't know how it has affected my body. Is it gone? My doctors have never thoroughly investigated. The Raynauds is not showing up any longer so hope that is gone for good. I have a terrible time with meds. Good luck with yours.

Re: To poster who had a bad reaction to Lisinopril (a bad cough)

I am SO glad I stumbled upon this thread. I started taking Lisinopril a little over a month ago. At the time, I did have a bit of a respiratory bug - coughing, but not much "junk". I haven't stopped coughing since. I commonly brush things off so I thought it was just the respiratory thing hanging on, given the stupid weather we've been having. The coughing gets so bad at times it can bring on dry heaves or make me fearful that I won't catch my breath. Reading this thread has caused me to give myself the "V-8 smack to the forehead". I'm seeing my GP tomorrow about getting a different BP medication. Is there any particular one I should perhaps request?

Thanks a bunch!
