I was able to save a good bit of money with my last contact lens order.

I have always ordered my lens from my eye doctor but this year I decided to shop around.

I looked into ordering online and I found that some prices were MUCH less than others- why?  Because the out-of-network providers can offer much lower prices.

I contacted my insurance company to find out if I have Out-of Network coverage and I do! It covers about $12 less than in-network.

The downside is I had to do some paperwork and I had to pay up front out of pocket and have to wait to be reimbursed BUT I saved just over $150.00 on 4 boxes of contacts! They arrived in 3 days, free shipping and free samples of wetting drops.

For those who wear contacts shop around and ask questions about your benefits, it is worth it!!

Re: Tip for contact lens wears

One thing I did was change opthamologists.

I knew one doc was putting me in a pricey brand I didn't need.

I changed doctors and had an honest talk. I don't require a pricey lens. He put me in Biofinity for $40 a box. So when you said you saved $150 on 4 boxes of contacts, I was like wowza!

Your doc is also a salesman.

I would not call him a salesman, but a very patient doctor.  He worked with me for at least 6 months, allowing me to take home and "test drive" dozens of different contacts.

I have dry eyes and sensitive eyes, but my vision is better in the right type of contacts over my glasses.

Unfortunately the best lens for me-by far  are daily wear contacts.  The good news was - the ones I fell in LOVE with were not the most expensive variety.

The boxes are sold by the 90 pack so the price is greater.

So I have to pay more for great vision and comfort, for me it is worth it.

They are one of the companies that do NOT participate in 99% of the insurance companies (Out of network) out there so their pricing is more competitive.

I think it's unusual for eyecare, including eyeglasses and contacts, to be covered by medical insurance.  Unless of course you have a medical condition that requires an opthalmologist.

Having said that, I would not buy eyeglasses and contacts through a doctor's office.  There are better deals elsewhere, just look around.

Is that why I had to pay the eye dr that I went to for a new script for contacts.I thought he was just mean.........lol  (he replaced my reg eye Dr that retired)  I did not know ins didn't cover that.

When I had to go to an opthalmologist for a very bad eye infection (I believe I got from the first dr) I had lots of intense care, many visits and meds and my Ins paid it all.

Re: Tip for contact lens wears

We go online, find the best deal, print it out and take it to the eye doctor's and they price match. Saves us a whole lot of money. By the way, 1-800-contacts is far and away NOT the cheapest. I can't remember the site we find the cheapest right off hand but they are much, much cheaper for the brand we get for my son than what 1-800-contacts costs.
