Re: Thoughts and Advice Welcome!

#1.  Who has MD or such behind their names.  Listen to them, even get 2nd opinion.

#2.  Is this something to discuss with HR?  Is this legal?  He's not medically certified right?  Hope he doesn't dispence drugs too.

#3.  You only have one life.  Be proactive in it!  Do your research and seek other MD opinions

Re: Thoughts and Advice Welcome!

@JohnnyWasnt  Your friend's boss is not a doctor and has no right to push CBD or any other meds on him. That said, his boss does have a right to expect that his employee will get the help he needs.  It sounds like that is what your friend is doing. Perhaps a note from the doctor would help the boss understand this better than your friend himself can.

The critical points are these: (1) anti-convulsants always have to be tweaked, and that can take a long time; (2) it's just as important to find out the reason for the seizures.  Anti-convulsants only help control a symptom (here, seizures) of a more serious underlying problem (example, brain tumors). Even if and when your friend finds an anti-convulsant (or a combinination of them) that controls his seizures, he needs to find the cause of the seizures, and deal with that immediately. At the very least, he should ask his neurologist about getting an MRI.

Re: Thoughts and Advice Welcome!

@vsm Thank you so much for giving so much thought to my friend's situation.  I do believe he has had an MRI and CT scan and they don't seem to know the cause of the seizures!

He has really been through the ringer (other health issues on top of this) and now to add this pushy boss (who is the OWNER of the business!) on top of everything.

So much stress!!

Thanks again!

Re: Thoughts and Advice Welcome!

I was under the assumption that if you have a seizure, your drivers license is suspended for 6 months.

For what it is worth, my DH's neurologist had no problem with him taking CBD oil, but then again, he isn't on any head meds.

The "boss" could be asking for trouble and a possible lawsuit mandating that his employee use CBD.  But then again, it seems to be the norm for today.

His boss is actually discriminating against him under the law. His seizures could be viewed as a disability and the boss threatening to fire him if he does not undertake a certain medical treatment is a violation under the EEOC.  So not sure how large a company he works for, but if it does have a HR Dept he should file a complaint.

Whether his seizures will mean he can no longer perform his job function or need accommodations in his work will be up to his treating physician to discuss with him. He should discuss these frankly with his doctor. He may need to take a leave of absence, go on disability or reduce his hours. Hopefully the medication he is taking will help him manage his condition. CBD oil has been helpful to some people but it could interfere with the medications he is on or how he responds to those and he should only take it if his doctor prescribes it.

Excellent observations and advice about the situation.  The boss should not be interfering.  He/she wouldn't want one of his workers telling them what to do.

An attorney needs to intervene.  Wishing your friend health and a peaceful resolution.

VSM: The critical points are practicing medicine w/out a license. That thing about the credit card also.

This friend could lose his job. Is there an HR? GENERALLY THEY CAN STEP-IN AND DO THE RIGHT THING.

Anyone that is not a Medical Doctor, or Specialist Doctor in that field?

I would be OUT THE DOOR immediately, if not sooner.  Full Stop!

Re: Thoughts and Advice Welcome!

[ Edited ]

Following a full seizure, in most states patients are not legally permitted to drive for a specified amount of time. In some states it's six weeks and it varies up to six months in many. (It may be shorter or longer in other states. IDK the laws in all 52 states.)

He probably had to tell his boss about the driving limitation and why. Additionally, I always felt it was important to tell my supervisors, often, those working around me of my seizures and educate them in the event of a problem. It happens and I need them to be helpful, not panic at the sight of me unconscious. I think he initially tried to do the right thing by being honesty with his boss. There is something very wrong with this story from that point on . . .

As an epileptic since birth, I've been on medicines for my entire life (74 years) and have never had a neurologist say, "It couldn't hurt." They don't want anything interferring with the medication, diet, sleep, lifestyle and harmony of their patient's system. The less stress, the better the seizures are controlled by meds.

This salesman should have walked out the door when his boss first mentioned the CBD, contacted his neurologist AND the local police.

The  boss is threatening him! It has escalated into illegal activity with the purchasing of CBD and using his credit card number without his approval.

Why is he allowing this behavior to continue? It makes no sense. There isn't a job on the planet worth the angst and illegal activity that guy is being put through. His health cannot take the stress; those seizures will return with a vengence. (Perhaps the boss knows that? Does he also know seizures do kill?)

Get the h#ll out of there and let an attorney & the police deal with that guy. Money isn't worth his health.  NO EXCUSES.

Money screams; wealth whispers.
