Tart Cherry Juice causing stomach upset - Capsules anyone?

I like the effect of the juice - it has helped with joint inflammation - but it is really irritating my stomach.

I was wondering if capsules might work better.

Do you take it with food?  That usually helps buffer things that cause stomach upsets.

Vitamin pills/etc. upset my stomach.  I'd drink the cherry juice along with eating food.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

I have been adding it to my morning protein drink. Maybe I'll try it with a meal once my stomach calms down.  It is griping right now.  I probably won't get much sleep tonight.

I can't tolerate Vit B unless it's with food......and I mean wrapped in food (like you trick a dog)

I have tried both..the capsules are better for me.

I tried taking the liquid with and without food and my stomaches bothers me .

I also find by taking one capsule of a morning with food and one with my evening meal i am sleeping better at night.

Stomach issue w/ cherries is quite common,

There's an enzyme in cherries that affects many.

I can only eat a 1/2-1 cup on a rarely basis.

Regular cherries don't bother me.  I have been adding them to my morning shake for years.  But that concentrated tart cherry juice really did a number on my stomach.

I started out with the recommended ounce and eventually  went down to 1/2 oz but that was still too much.  And it was always with the recommended amount of water.

After a few days without the juice, my stomach feels so much better.  It took a while to figure it out because my stomach never hurt right after drinking my shake. It would start to bother me much later in the day.

I hope I'll be able to tolerate the capsules.

Montana, maybe you could start by using very little and slowly increasing your dosage.

Since you have capsules now, you could open the capsule up and just take say one third of it the first time and slowly work up to a full dosage over a period of 2-3 weeks.

Right now your stomach is in rebellion and is irritated. Going with a full dose could just exacerbate your reaction. You need to give it time to repair itself.

Of course, you probably won't get the benefits ot the capsules while you are slowly building up to a full dose. But if doing it this way allows your stomach the opportunity to get used to this ingredient, then you'll be all set in a few weeks.

Best of luck!!

[ Edited ]

Tart cherries contain sorbitol. Some people are extremely sensitive to sorbitol and have stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain.   This just recently happened to my friend. I am drinking tart cherry juice and told her about it. She tried it and got violently ill. I thought she might be exaggerating, so I did tons of research. Xylitol in tart cherries can also provoke this reaction. It is called sorbitol intolerance. There are also people with fructose intolerance and fructose malabsorption.  These disorders provoke similar reactions. My friend's reaction was sudden and severe. One glass, approximately six ounces of juice, and she was in bed for a few days. I drink the juice and have no problem. It helps my sleep. I feel more rested upon awakening. I have reflux and any juice, milk, liquid I drink at night comes back up. I expected the tart cherry juice to do this but it has not done so, yet.  Research shows that runners benefit from the juice after running, in case there are some athletes reading.
