Taking pin out after bunion surgery

For those who have had this surgery-when did you have the pin taken out and were you put to sleep? I had mine last June. The pin has to come out and they told me I would need general anesthesia again. I just don't want this. I was led to believe it was just a local and easily taken out-no big deal. Now it is to be a big deal. What is your experience?
