Re: Taking Supplements, yes or no?

  • I take supplements, multi, calcium, Vit D, Selenium and Ubiquinol.

@Tend2dogs I have Hashimotos too. What supplements do you take for your thyroid. I've been taking Selenium. Is there anything else?

My doctor told me if I "ate off the land" meaning veggies, fruits, beans etc. you wouldn't need supplements. Although I try to eat a healthy diet, I'm not 100% perfect. So if your not eating right, supplements make sense. IMO at least a multi.

Re: Taking Supplements, yes or no?

I take Nature'S Code Vitamin packs & Krill Oil w/12mg Astaxanthin and have for many years.  Due to the high level of stress from my job, hereditary heart issues & a bit more peace of mind when I don't eat right at times, I am a big supporter of taking supplements & to date, feel it has been an investment that is paying off.

[ Edited ]

I take the ones my doc has recommended. Unfortunately I have malabsorption from my diagnosed scleroderma and my nutritional needs are very compromised. Vitamin and nutritional supplementation is the only way I can get what I need to stay healthy, besides eating nutritionally dense food.

I had my blood and urine tested for vitamins and minerals, a kind of nutritional panel so to speak. When I got my results back they looked to be the results from someone who was malnourished. At the time I was underweight, like 95 pounds at 5-3, and I could not keep the weight on...even to this day I have problems with it.

Re: Taking Supplements, yes or no?

Since I had gastro problems and could not eat like I should in 2016, I started taking a Kid's Multi vitamin and I am quite pleased with it.  It and what I eat gives me what I need.

I will not take on that has over 100% of MDR.  Why put 1,000 time anything you need into your body?

My policy has always been, unless you have a disorder that requires it, less is more.   My lab work is good, except for my Vitamin D.   I do take Vit D + calcium.

Everytime I see a show offering any time of vitamins and supplements, I wonder "do I really need those."  I find watching HSN's Lessman is overwhelming.  Do people really take all that stuff.

I have also read different studies and information saying it's a waste of money.  It's a lot of money to invest in and how would you know if it really makes a difference.  Just asking for opinions on if you take them and how you determine what you need and did it make a difference.

Re: Taking Supplements, yes or no?

I only became a believer in any supplements within the past year - before that, I too believed that vitamins weren't necessary and that most supplements aren't necessary, period.

Through my own experience, in the past year it's been proven to me in my individual body that as we age (just off the top of my head, not scientific, say after 55), our bodies lose some of their ability to absorb and store nutrients.

Example: My vitamin D levels tanked rock bottom. I was put on Rx supplementation, and ever since have taken a supplement. Lack of vit D affects more than you might think. It's not something I want to be low on, after reading. My doctor explained that I wasn't low because I needed to go stand in the sun more, but because aging bodies need help making/absorbing vit D.

I also learned that a medication I take daily and have for the past 8-9 years is known to suck up vit B-12, so I now take B-12 supplements.

I had slight to moderate diabetic neuropathy. I read a discussion here of people with neuropathies. That led me to research a couple of supplements proven by medical studies to be "nerve food" so to speak. I bought them. I'm not joking, my neuropathy pain was gone in 48 hrs! When I don't take the pills for a couple of days, the pain starts to return. When I start up again, the pain goes away. Proof enough for me.

My feeling on "a supplement for everything" ala Lessman is  just a guy with a gold mine making money hand over fist in general. I don't believe most people need to take 20 different supplements every day. IMO that is foolish and throwing your money away.

But I now do believe that some supplements targeted to specific deficiencies are very valuable - when you know they make an obvious difference to your physical health.

Most of these can be bought at the drugstore or Amazon with a little research. Costco makes many major supplements very reasonable in price. Buying from someone like Lessman is spending more than you need to because you buy into his 'nice guy, I'll protect you, my products are so pure' shtick. Not to mention, wth him 15 supplements a month are way better for you than 2-3 ;-(

People who have had any sort of gastric bypass or weight loss surgery have similar problems. They must take supplements as their bodies just don't retain or absorb nutrients.

Re: Taking Supplements, yes or no?

The only supplements I take are the ones either prescribed by 1 of my doctors, or suggested by one of them because of a specific diagnosed issue. I take 2400mg of Omega 3 Fish Oil per day, suggested by my Cardiologist. I now take 2,000mg of Vitamin D3 because of having a deficiency when I was very sick last year.

I get a monthly B12 injection per my Hematologist, which helps keep my Iron Ferritin at a level where I need Iron Infusions less frequently. That is all the supplementing I do, and all are for either deficiencies(diagnosed, not guessed because I might feel tired), or suggested strongly by my Specialists in their specific field, to further help insure against serious issues I have undergone with my health.

When I feel tired I do hot expect any supplement, unless insufficient to allow me to run a marathon. In my opinion, too many expect a supplement to somehow turn them into world class athlete. And also in my opinion, allowing so-called experts to say pretty much that about their product capabilities.

If a body is not seriously deficient in mandatory vitamins and minerals or have, by blood tests Deficient? Some are merely acting as a placebo and if a person thinks they feel better? That decision is solely up to them.
