Were you an Xray Technician or a Radiologist MD?  Just curious. My wife's niece started as an Xray Tech and decided to further her career to a Radiologist Doctor.

In 1974 when I fractured my tailbone the Xray was the best they had available for bones at the hospital I always used.

Showed me the Xray and after some explanation, I could see the fracture. I had to wait what seemed like forever to see the Xray.

Re: Tailbone pain after fall

Please get an Xray or something soon. I did fall while roller blading when I was 40 and I fractured my tailbone. It still hurts to this day at times when I sit on hard surfaces. The terrible initial pain lasted about 2-3 weeks. I almost passed out when it first happened, the pain was so awful. I went to the emergency room. I continue to sit on a good cushion from cushion lab dot com. Highly recomment this brand. I would also suggest you get arnicare or arniflora at any major drug store in the muscle relief aisle. Put it on your bruises 4 times a day. A long handled cooking spoon made out of silicon will help you reach these areas. It is softer than a wooden spoon.

Re: Tailbone pain after fall

@Kitty Galore  I broke my tailbone giving birth in 1995. I had the exact same experience as you as far as a donut  did not help me, and standing and walking gave me the most relief. Even laying on my stomach made it throb for some reason.

I hate to say this, but it was several weeks before it started to very gradually feel better. I got Cortizone injections regularly, but they didn't help much so I stopped getting them. Even years later sitting in a certain position would make it throb. I can say I have not noticed any issues with it for about the past 10 years.

I hope you get some relief soon🙂.

You should see a doctor. I had a coworker who broke her tailbone, i.e. coccyx in a water ski accident. Took her many weeks to recover and it was very painful.

@hckynutjohn I am a retired X-Ray Tech. Those pictures of a tailbone are hard to get,and I imagine difficult to read.

Thank you for your reply. I see the great word I like, "retired". Been that for over 3 decades now.

My Xray for my tailbone was back in the mid '60's or the '70's. The most recent one I looked at was my broken ribs and also my compromised left lung because of Pleural Fluid. Had to have a Thoracentesis, which removed 1.4 liters of fluid.

Was very easy to see my very short left lung in comparison to my right lung. I am sure the technology has advanced a lot with Xrays since the year I had mine. This Xray sure told me why I couldn't breath too well when ice skating.

Thanks again, appreciate your response. And Happy Retirement!  🥂🎂

Re: Tailbone pain after fall

Update .... My primary gave me the X-ray results and it shows no fractures or breaks thank God !! Shows some degeneration which is natural with age and life . Once the bruising subsides there will be less pain. I do feel better each day, it's just going to take time I realize. An MRI is suggested for more detail which I'm sure when I see my Ortho next week will surely order.

fell back and right away felt the pain in my tailbone .   At my hair salon was paying my stylist and felt dizzy and just fell back thank God there was one of those thick rubber like runners , but still it was a hard fall right on my bum then fell completely all the way down.    My tail bone today is very painful hard to sit especially .   Tried one of those donuts to sit on only made it worse .   Standing and walking feels the best .  My DH is taking good care of me, cooking etc.   Trying to get comfortable on my lazy boy not easy though .

will call my primary Monday and see if I can go for an X-ray.  Hoping it's just a deep bruise and not a fracture .   Bruised and turned black and blue almost immediately.  I don't bruise easy usually.   Has anyone had a tail bone injury ,  if so how long did it take to heal ?

@Kitty Galore   My story is unusual.  Yes, I took a hard fall and I am very thin.  With no padding back there it was horrible pain.  Took Cortizone injections back there for over two years.  Then my surgeon suggested removing it.  I said "Don't I need it"?  He said no.  He had only did one other one in his 22 years of practice.  I had enough of standing to eat and the horrible pain.  I had mine removed on a Tuesday and was home hanging out clothes on a Thursday.   The key is finding a surgeon that will do it.   I am very happy to be rid of it.  A one and a half inch incision and nobody can see it.  LOL My Dr. said if I was heavy he would not have done the surgery but being so thin it was so easy to do.

@Kitty Galore

Going back to you initial post I can't say your update surprises me. With my experience of actually fracturing(breaking my tailbone decades ago, I could/can still relate to that specific injury.

As many have stated in this thread, there are certain parts of the human body that take s long time to heal. During that healing process most every person suffers from pain, and in certain injuries, there are no specific ways, to eliminate it other than time.

Sure Opioids and other pain medications can lessen the pain. But in that same note, they possibly prolong the healing. Most people feeling physical pain, do their best to avoid things that aggravate it. Those on Opioids, on the other hand, not feeling the same pain, do things that potentially, can slow down the healing process.

With athletes that have long term recoveries, it is not the physical pain that bothers them. It is the psychological pain of knowing that they have to wait it out until it is actually healed, not having the injury masked by Opioids or other strong pain killers.

I am glad to see you now realize that it will take time to heal, or at least feel better. As I said in my 1st post here. My injury was many decades ago when I was a very young man. It still bothers me quite often, but I see it as it is what it is. Another pain I have to learn to live with it.
