Re: TOTAL GYM. It's not Cardio.

[ Edited ]

One saying they ‘can’t lose weight unless they exercise’

is a slippery slope. If you can lose weight with diet alone,

you’re eating incorrectly.

If someone is injured or physically disabled preventing them

from moving full range of motion, they can attain a normal

body weight just like anyone else through nutrition alone.

There are many reasons why one should move with purpose.

Mentally, spiritually, flexibility, strength...but never for weight loss.

I thought we’ve evolved from that notion....

ETA: Total Gym could be considered cardio aka ‘in oxygen.’

Anything can be in oxygen...just depends on the person.

If getting up & walking to the bathroom causes one to breathe

with purpose, you are technically in an aerobic state.

Being strong aerobically rewards you w/ a strong heart & lungs.

Just as important as strength.

re: jump squats on the Total Gym

   Oh, isn't that fun!

I remove the footboard and prop a "mini" trampoline in its place. Love to do jump squats this way while watching tv.

I believe they've developed a trampoline foot attachment since I bought my TGym, but my improvositation works fine.

My mini trampoline is at least a yard in diameter, allowing me to vary foot placement with each jump.

@ellaphant

There's one good exercise that is cardio - the "cardio pull".  It's on my pamphlet that came with my machine.  I usually do 300 at a time & did it this morning.  I enjoy that exercise very much.

You cannot out exercise a bad diet.  You can exercise until the cows come home but if you are overeating, you are going to have a rough go of it.

Yes you need cardio but building muscle through weights/weight training will burn more calories for a longer period of time than cardio.

Your thread title is completely incorrect.

I do an aerobic workout on my Total Gym.

As to the content of your post, it's possible to reduce a considerable percentage of body fat and not lose weight if you are building muscle at the same time.  Been there, done that.

Oh please. Yeah, if your a WWE wrestler lifting high amounts of weight. Not for the average person.

@ellaphant , you might benefit from a good personal trainer.  Strength training doesn't mean lifting heavy weights.

@sgraham30

I didn't know you were having Cardiac issues. Did you post something about them here?  My history with Cardiac Disease I have talked about here frequently, along with my recoveries. Just curious about why Cardio is ruled out of your recovery. Do what you will with my male/heart patient curiosity.

Re: TOTAL GYM. It's not Cardio.

Seems like this thread got to be more about nutrition and not a lot about the title of this thread, which had to do with the Total Gym and it's Cardio Capabilities.

I think I said(?) in an earlier post, that I have had my TG 2000 for about 25 years. My purpose of buying it had absolutely nothing to do with even thinking about using it for Cardio. Back then, there was no "rebounder", and even though I always improvise a lot of my training on my many machines, never gave a thought making a springboard to go into the foot plate slot.

I had a Pilates XP for many years, with a rebounder, and while it was Cardio Capable, I found it to be too risky for my major Cardio Joints. Incline walking and/or my Recumbent, were much better for me to increase my Max VO2 numbers, with no joint risk.

Do more with my Bowflex now than my TG, but I still use it to keep my Quad strength by doing 1 leg squats(never close to 90°), and that has served me well for all my recoveries, and more specifically, the muscle mainly used for ice skating power strokes and leg speed.

Rambling on now! Nope, fine'

I am proof that you can lose weight simply by managing diet alone.  No weight training, no gym, no aerobics.  That's not to say you will be in optimal health overall but yes you can lose weight.  you can also use these machines in such a way to do nonstop circuit type training with light resistance and high reps so they can be aerobic.

Wear a mask. Social distance. Be part of the solution - not part of the problem.

Re: TOTAL GYM. It's not Cardio.

@ellaphantTrue, but weight loss depends upon what we eat way, way more than exercise  (cardio or not).  Still, we need exercise and a Total Gtm works to get a person to do that, then it's fine because any exercise is better than none.

Re: TOTAL GYM. It's not Cardio.

@willdob3The doctor who finally convinced me when I was turning 75 that I had to change my eating habits agrees with you.  He's not against exercise  but he emphasized far more to change what I had been eating as well as the amounts.

It's been nearly 3 years now and I'm down 55 pounds -  and he's still playing the same song:  what you eat and drink is primary  -  above your genes, above exercise. etc.  I think he added at east 10 comfortable years to my life!
