Thanks to everyone who commented about their experiences. It sounds like a mouth device is the thing to try.
Right now we are down south, but will head north in a couple months where our dentist is. He has seen a dentist down here in the past and had work done. It is much more $$$ down here and we don't have dental insurance. They have preconsultations just for cleanings and they want to set up a "plan of action". LOL
We may have to bite the bullet........not figuratively!

When I noticed the terrible pain my mouth/jaw was in I went to see my dentist the same day believing I had some teeth problems. I could barely open my mouth but he was able to get a few X-rays. He immediately called another dentist who specialized in TMJ patients only and I was very lucky I got to see him at the end of the day. He was going to give me a shot to relax my jaw muscles but instead he wanted me try a few exercises twice a day for a few days that would help stretch some muscles. It worked. Since that first visit, I have experienced TMJ three times and and followed the same instructions he provided the first time. Like some other comments, suggest you see a dentist and ask them if they know of a TMJ Specialist.

I had it years ago and it was caused by stress (though I didn't know that at the time). Accupuncture, reflexology, meditation, eft, lavendar essential oil are some things you might want to look into.

I get Botox in my masseter muscles for jaw pain and it helps so much. Might be worth looking into.

Contact your dentist they can custom make the mouth guard.. that's the only way to get a proper fit... the one's over the counter I'd stay away from...

Yes I was DX with this....and went to a dentist specialist at that time (so I thought) and he made a night splint for me. I wore that for several yrs but it just wasn't doing the trick.
Went to a new dentist who told me my bite was really off....only 2 of my teeth would meet to touch partially while chewing food. He recommended I do orthodontics to fix my bite. He was the 3rd dentist that told me this by the way but I didn't have the money to do it. Fast forward I did invisalign and my bite is now correct. I do not use the thick uncomfortable night splint for TMJ but just my retainers each night to make sure my teeth do not shift.
This was the reason I was having TMJ pain so fixing that issue changed everything for me. Also learning to practice new habits....tongue placement inside of the mouth. Keeping your mouth closed and jaw relaxed...tongue tip just behind front teeth base of the roof mouth area. There are books on this...I have one by a therapist in TMJ and did everything in there that made sense to me LOL!
When I feel stressed I make sure I do NOT clench and I never have my teeth touching during the day. My jaw is relaxed with a slight space between my teeth. No mouth breathing either. Lips light pressed together unless your eating or talking. Even working out...I do not mouth breath.
For me it was bad habits and my bite all messed up.

@Reilley That's right - good reminder about the injections to relax the jaw. Was it botox that he was going to give you? I think they do use botox for that now.
The exercises are a great idea - sort of like what the chiropractor did for me - like physical therapy/massage therapy for the jaw.

I am also wondering about what type shot it was. @GenXmuse mentioned getting botox. I wonder what type doctor gives this to her....a neurologist?
My DH asked the doctor when he was in the other day for a steroid shot in his elbow if they ever give this for TMJ. She said no. She also said that she has TMJ and uses an OTC guard and that gives her the most relief. Also eating soft food and relaxing the jaw.

@tends2dogs I get mine from an MD dermatologist who does injections. Insurance didn't cover it but it was a lot easier than trying to find a dentist that incorporates Botox into their practice. It just two injections so it wasn't expensive to do but worth it. I can tell when it wears off and it keeps me up at night.
