Swollen Hand? Gout? Ever heard of this!

For 5 weeks my right hand thumb and first finger has been swollen plus terrible terrible pain came on suddenly. Swelling goes down after about 2 days but never back to normal then swells up again.  My hand is unusable at moment too much pain.

Could not get Drs app for 3 weeks, in meantime saw Nurse Practitioner had X-ray - inflammatory arthritis she said were results of X ray and gave me tube of cream.  No help at all cream I mean.

Today saw my Dr hand very swollen he dug around and put me on 5 days prednisone, and some pain pills, if needed but also done blood work for uric acid as he thinks it could be gout! not  arthritis.

I have never heard of this go back 19th to find results.  Anyone ever heard of gout in hand?  Thanks.

I have seen gout in the feet, ankles and knees, but not in the hands, but I believe anywhere you have a joint you could have gout. My husband has had a gout attack twice, both times in his great toe on each foot. It may help to apply warm moist heat to your hand for swelling and pain, it helps my husband when he has an attack. I actually thought gout and arthritis go hand in hand.

Yes, gout can occur in any joint.  Right after I got out of college, I had a severe attack in my toes and I was 22 years old! It was ridiculous how much it hurt.

Gout is a form of arthritis. The thumb is a frequently attacked joint.

Cherries, or cherry juice is supposed to help.

Gout is known for being one of the most painful of conditions.

Changes in diet, no organ meat, or rich greasy foods etc. help in lessening attack frequency and severity.

Good Luck.

Yes. Several weeks ago I was out for the day and came home with some minor pains in hips. Decided to go to bed early. Fifteen minutes after retiring, I received a phone call and when I attempted to get out of bed I couldn't walk forward or backward - only sideways. Had the most horrible pain I had ever experienced.

Went to ER next day but they did no blood work. Sent home with antiinflamitories and told to take Tylenol. The next day I was sill in pain but had chills. Went to PCP who had me admitted to hospital. After every imaginable blood test done they found my uric acid level was double the normal range.

Absolutely every joint in my body was swollen and painful but especially the hands and wrists. Since it has subsided the areas where the most pain existed have had pealing skin. I am now on a drug to help prevent the body from manufacturing uric acid. Scheduled with a rheumatologist soon.

For goodness sake, stay away from any coffee, tea, beer, alcohol, beer, red meat, and sweets.  Drink water.

Yes, my husband was diagnosed after a weird swollen bump on his hand.  It took 3 doctors to diagnose.  Now he is on daily meds and more meds if he has an attack.  The meds work.

@ECBG  I googled this and read about no caffeine - o.m.g. I am a Brit without my cuppa tea what will I do!  The rest of suggested banned foods, etc do not bother me but my tea!

Going to buy some Turmeric tea to try - if my family in G.B find out I will be disowned lol.

Took my first dose of meds but pain so bad I then did also take prescribed pain pill which I swore I would not take my son-in-law told me if you need it go for it.  Hope it improves a but tomorrow.

thank you all for help and encouragement  after 5 weeks of nothing I was getting a bit desperate.  Thanks again all.
