Gubby1, flossing & oil pulling are very different. I can't imagine people picking one over the other. That is not really what it is about, IMO.

Most of the people I know who do oil pulling have pretty good habits & just started pulling for the teeth whitening benefits. I never heard a single person ask if they could do oil pulling instead of something else, like flossing or brushing. I tried it because it sounded very weird yet I kept hearing rave reviews. I've always had good teeth & pretty white ones at that. But don't we all want better than what we have?

Yeah, I would think if you are willing to swish oil in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes you would be pretty well committed to good oral hygiene. I have just started oil pulling a few times a week. I am very meticulous about my teeth since I have been through braces once as a teen and second as an adult (didn't wear my retainer enough initially). Now I have beautiful teeth that I cherish!

I think this is one of the most revolting, nauseating ideas that kooky ole Oz has ever presented. Anyone who would even consider this has lost her mind.

Will...thanks for informing me that oil pulling and flossing are different. I will pass that word around the dental community I am active in. Tell them I learned that on QVC.

AS I mentioned,my experience is from my office only.We are asked DAILY if oil pulling will take the place of flossing. And,as I mentioned, this is mostly from patients with very poor oral hygiene. They are not committed to good oral hygiene, with basically a low dental IQ. I will repeat, this is experience from my office only.

Umm, it's not initially from Dr. Oz although he may have mentioned it on his show. This is a practice used in Ayurvedic healing. I guess you would think alternative medicine is used by people that have lost their minds. Really?

There are a lot of weird claims regarding oil-pulling. Some people think it pulls toxins from your blood stream.

I found this Huffington Post quote that I think is reasonable:

"It whitens teeth. Coconut oil possesses natural antibiotic and anti-viral properties that brighten dull or yellowed teeth and enhance the cleansing action of oil-pulling, according to Dr. Bruce Fife. It also improves gum health, eliminates bad breath and makes for a prettier smile."

I think it's reasonable to try oil-pulling for the reasons stated in the quote above...but if you think it's going to cure your cancer, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's...I think you are hoping for too much.

Well I've never heard anyone mention (on Dr. Oz or anywhere else) that it would "cure" you of anything. However, I've heard it's good for clearing the toxins from your mouth and of course whitening your teeth.

It was on Dr Oz and he did mention that it was good for your mouth and also aids in preventing other diseases (none specifically). I do believe in alternative medicine and this has been practiced in India for centuries with good results.

I'd be interested to know the science behind this theory. Sounds useless to me.

With regard to the coconut oil, it contains medium chain fatty acids (lauric and capric and capryllic acids) that kill a wide variety of bacteria and disable many viruses. It makes sense, therefore, that swishing it around in your mouth for a while might kill many germs and leave your mouth fresher and cleaner. We all have very unique bacterial and viral ecosystems in our noses and throats. Many people are non-shedding carriers of staph aureus, neisseria meningitidis, and other germs, but because they are not actually experiencing the disease, but merely harboring the germs, they are unaware of their carrier status.

I oil pull. I use Flax Seed Oil. At first it was gross but now it is no big deal. I swish while I am flat ironing my hair and picking out clothes for work etc. My dental hygenist, at my last appt said that I had little plaque and what I did have came off easily (unlike my visits before oil pulling) so I think there is some merit to it. I have to remember not to spit it in the sink (it can clog up your pipes) and aim for the trash can instead.
