I read that large doses of Vitamin D help a lot.

Balanced diets don't always provide it all. Age and a less efficient gut can effect how much we get out of our food. Sometimes supplementation can help, especially when you consider the quality of food in our markets these days.

Re: Supplements...

[ Edited ]

I've never experienced a doctor who knows much about nutrition or supplementation or were even interested in speaking about it.

That's why I always say you have to educate yourself and be your own advocate for your own health by researching and asking others experiences and if need be seeking out experts in the field and primary care doctors usually aren't the resources you can depend on.

As posted before most primary care doctors (or others) receive very little education in nutrition.

I think it depends on the person and the supplements. I cannot take a multivitamin; it upsets my stomach within 1/2 hour of taking it and I have tried several versions and brands. Dr says it is not an uncommon reaction. I take several supplements and my bloodwork is always stellar. Dr says to keep doing what I am doing. You can go overboard with them, however.  I had a student years ago being raised by his grandmother; she was a fanatic regarding what he ate.  She threatened to have me fired when I gave donuts to the students who showed up for Saturday school to get ready for state testing. She had him take 20 supplements/vitamins every day. He ended up in the hospital in bad shape. His body could not digest so many pills at the same time and the result was a big ball of pills in his stomach that they had to break up and pump out. Ick.

Yes, this reminds me of taking turmeric for my arthritic right knee. It did wonders for me...I could easily do my walking routine...however, my stomach started to rebel. I looked at the instructions on the bottle (which I had failed to do initially) and it very specifically stated to not use if a gallbladder problem was an issue (which it was). I stopped and my stomach settled down.

It also depends on the type of supplements.

I have some I have taken in the last few years that definitely help me.  When I stop them, I can tell.  Even adjusting the dosage makes a difference.

I'd get a new dr because I'd wonder what else he/she was uninformed about.
