when I told relatives at a family dinner I was drinking three 16.9 ounce Mountain Dews a day everyone flipped out on me. I told my niece I've been drinking these for years. Used to be a "Tab" gal in the 70s, switched to Pepsi for a while and found Dew in the early 90s. I don't like the latest fad of scolding people over what they eat - I'm not a gym rat never been. Much like the cigarette frenzy in the 80s and 90s. It used to be you could smoke anywhere back in the glory days of the 1950s. Now they are after Soda, really ruined the dinner made me feel guilty.

I think the people "flipped out" because drinking that much soda of any kind is just unhealthy, but you know that.

@Reever I like Mountain Dew too but only drink one occasionally. I always drink the diet version. I imagine people are concerned because at one time it got a lot of publicity because it was so high in caffeine. Perhaps you should check and see how much it has now. If you were to suddenly discontinue it, you could have some ugly withdrawal symptoms. If you also drink coffee or tea, you could be getting an excess of caffeine.

I was in a horrible accident a few months ago. My recovery was filled with classes and therapy with other patients and most were stroke victims. The medical classes they made us attend talked about possible causes of strokes. We were warned that sodas should be avoided completely. Seeing all that I did, I doubt I will ever have another soda - diet or otherwise.

I understand how you feel. My suggestion is to see it as familial concern for your health, not a scolding.Your family means well. They want you around and as healthy as you can be. My sister has had a soda addiction for years so I know it's hard.
My MIL eats terribly, if she eats at all. She's very sickly and she responds with similar anger when her son and other family members try to coax her to eat better. Her doctor told her she was prediabetic in 2014 when we lived with her and she just focused very angrily on what she couldn't eat.

As a child of a chain smoker, it's hard for me to attest to the glory days of smoking. These habits went to the wayside because back in the day they were glorified by companies at the expense of their unsuspecting customers.
It's a miracle I never had asthma as a child. The walls of my house were always yellow. If I returned a clothing item to a store, it reeked and I would be given a hard time. I spent my youth going to the store to buy cigarettes for my mom. It's not the childhood I was hoping for.

@Reever I think your family means well because they care about you.
I figured out that you drink at least six 8oz glasses each day of MD.
That is a huge amount and you may be addicted to whatever is in there. Try to cut down and see how your body reacts to a lesser amount of just three glasses a day to start with. If you are craving it and can't wait to open another can/bottle, then you are addicted.
