There was some sort of digestion discussion in the Wellness forum recently where a person shared their method of stewing mixed dried fruits for better digestion.  I can't find it now, DOH!  All I remember is that it included apricots and a cinnamon stick.

Can anyone point me to it or if you posted that recipe, would you mind sharing again? Thanks!

Re: Stewed fruits for digestion

I don't recall seeing this ... but was the point to digest fruit more easily ... or stewed fruit helped with digestion problems in general?

BTW ... you can always use the Search feature here to bring up topics of previous threads.  It's a very handy feature.

It is on the thread Constipation - you'll find it if your type in the search bar.

I didn't see that thread either, but my dad stewed prunes when I was a kid----I happen to like them myself----good to use for constipation.

Nothing works for me but prune juice 1/4 cup warm.  With Meds I have to take, a blessing.

Thanks everyone!  LOL makes sense the thread title would be constipation. Smiley Very Happy

I made it this morning and it's too delicious to be "food as medicine."  I got dried apricots, tart cherries (also supposed to be good for joints), prunes and golden raisins.  For spice I added cinnamon, a couple of cardamom pods, a pinch of ground cloves and a little dried ginger.  Wow!  The whole house smelled amazing, too.  It will be hard to limit myself it tastes so good.  I'll be having it with yogurt or on my oatmeal.

I recently read that prunes are excellent for bone health, another benefit.

@wagirl @My dad liked them too and ate them every morning. He just put prunes in a bowl and added water to cover, then microwaved for a couple minutes. After they cooled he put in the refrigerator. In a few days the water became prune juice. I think both are delicious. Years ago there was a Breakstone yogurt flavor called Prune Whip. It was my favorite.

I haven't seen the recipe but will look for it. When my mom made cranberry sauce she would add slices of lemon along with the sugar. I think lemon would be a great addition to stewed dried fruits of any kind.

Prunes are also low glycemic...they do not raise the blood sugar in a huge spike   like other fruits do.

Re: Stewed fruits for digestion

Since stewed fruits are not low carb or low calories, and I try to avoid sugars as much as possible, I went in another direction.

At dinnertime, before I start eating, I take two little mild stool softener tablets.

I am shocked at how regular that keeps me ....  and never even think about "regularity" any more.

Re: Stewed fruits for digestion

A friend told me to combine warmed prune juice with milk of mag and drink at bedtime. I'm not sure of the ratio but my dad tried it and it really worked
