You are a member of a club -- no doubt a club that you don't want to be a member of!  I'm also a member of it!

I started the topic not long ago about being a "sugar addict".  And boy, am I ever!  So, this has caused me to gain weight and feel not so good about myself!  Of couse, I have gained it in my stomach, my hips and thighs!  It always goes where you least need it or want it!

Have courage and take each day at a time.  You have addressed it and you are taking steps to improve yourself.  So, you're well on your way.  Once you set your mind to it -- that's really what a person has to do --- set their mind to it --- you accomplish your goals!  Will it be a fast success?  No - unfortunately.  You didn't gain the weight overnight and you will not lose it overnight.

Something I beat myself up about over and over --- I fall off the wagon and I feel defeated and then I quit.  Please reaslize that we all have an off day or eat things we shouldn't, but this doesn't mean we are failures!  We can start again and continue on!

Also, I started at the beginning of this month trying to cut out candy and baked goods.  Oh, but this is hard!  The first week I thought I would go crazy!  It's still not easy --- I won't lie, but I am getting more used to it.  I allow myself one goody one day a week.  This gives me something to look forward to.  And I am slowly losing a bit of weight.

Slow and steady wins the war or battle, however you want to look at it.

If your issue with food is just over-eating in general and not just a particular food type, then -- yes --- portions are very important.

Over the years I have been on many different diets.  Some worked well and others didn't.  I bought books which listed many foods that listed the calories and fat content, etc.  These helped and got me used to the value of foods.  I also used to track what I was eating and when.  This also helped a lot.  I would not limit my diet, meaning --- don't get rid of any particular food.  Give yourself a variety.  But if something is higher in calories and/or fat, just eat less of it and add more of something less caloric such as a vege.

As for exercise, I can't do a whole lot either.  Look for arm chair things you can do -- there are a lot of things on-line.  Go slow so you don't hurt yourself.

You can do it!  Just remember that!

Wow! So much encouragement and helpful ideas in your post. Thanks!! My food issues tend to be sweets- just like you. there isn't a donut or a milkshake or a bag of candy that doesn't have my name on it.
After I posted about my weight, I determined that I would need to go cold turkey on this "food group" which I've joked is the base of my food pyramid. 🤗

Junk food in general is a problem. Portion control not a problem except as it relates to junk food. So. In cutting out these things and substituting healthy alternatives, I've lost 6 pounds since my original post!!
Impulse and boredom snacking, also problems. Especially at night while watching tv. So now I pay close attention to physical signals of hunger. Then and only then do I eat. My snacks are fruit, or two tablespoons of hummus with portioned pita chips, or a boiled egg. You get the idea.
My daily lunch is a slim fast shake. I drink plenty of water.
Like you said, this is a slow process- it should be if we are going to sustain it over the long haul. I'm good with that. I no longer consider how I'm eating a "diet". There are merely choices that I make.

As for exercise, I just started four weeks of PT for bursitis in my hip. Three time a week plus doing the exercises at home on non-therapy days. It's more than I was doing, lol.
You and I have a very similar mindset. 🥰

@Deree   I follow most of what you have written.  It is interesting to me to read these posts and see the diverse approaches to weight loss and what people think is best..  I wrote a long post about my healthy lifestyle, but realized in the end each of us is attracted to certain plans and I ended up deleting the lengthy post.

Wishing you the best of health!

@phoenixbrd, I would have loved to have read your response. Since decreasing meat and no dairy, more of a plant based diet, I am back down to the weight I was in 2016 and even was able to give up all statins. I remember your informative posts over the years about your lifestyle and used to enjoy reading them.

Just wanted you to know as I was "listening." Just took me a few years to apply some of your knowledge.

Fairydogmother - I am so proud of you!!  Way to go.  I know it isn't easy and that makes every pound lost a real victory.  I'm now down 8.8 lbs, but it has taken me 8 days to lose that additional pound.  That's ok....I will take it and keep moving forward.  Here's to feeling better about ourselves. 😁

Congrats on your weight loss!  It feels good, righ?!  I don't get on the scale except for maybe every other week.  Some people weigh every day.  I used to do that but if I would go up and knew that I was "good", it would make me feel disappointed in myself and I was more likely to just quit.  So, now I do better not weighing myself so often!

It is HARD to control the old sweet tooth.  A person has to be mindful of it all the time.  I am the same way -- I am an emotional eater.  And eating in the evening was always a big thing for me.

I'm glad you're getting PT and doing some things at home.  Just these small things will help you and make you feel much better.

Eight pounds, fantastic 👏 I agree with doing this slowly and sustainably.
6-8 pounds lost makes a noticeable difference in how our clothes fit. That is a huge motivator for me to keep going.
Let's keep in touch on how we are progressing

My eating is just out of control. I'm a good twenty pounds overweight. Need to stop the spiral. I want to lose and maintain. Have spent too much $$$ on WW. Too tedious and I question any plan that's in the profit making business. Tried calorie counting apps. When I have to track and log every bite I take, I soon develop an unhealthy obsession about food. Thinking about it constantly.
And I can't stick with it.
What I want is to make changes that are sustainable. And to cut out the daily intake of junky snacks, ice cream, etc.
I've done some reading about the Mediterranean diet, which is deemed very healthy by dietitians. I don't do fad or trendy diets as that will not work for me in the long run.
I'm 71, most excess weight is belly fat, so very unhealthy and unsightly. I am 5'4".
I weigh 165 with a BMI of 28. This was the second item mentioned in my orthopedic surgeon's notes yesterday after my appt. How embarrassing.

So today I shopped, brought home lots of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, hard cooked eggs, whole grain bread and cereals, hummus. It's a start.

Tips, ideas and success strategies would be welcomed.

Try the GOLO program that is advertised on TV.  They say it's a lifestyle change and not a diet.  Not sure what it entails though @fairydogmother

Eat clean. There are many sites that list the foods and the foods not to eat when eating clean. You can have so much food that its usually even too much food!

@fairydogmother , the best advice I could ever give after decades of failure is very simple: If you don't buy it, you won't eat it. Works every time....

Sorry, @Etoile308 , I didn't read ahead. That is the only advice that will always work. Smiley Happy
