Then I read the side affects about this causing jaw problems in the bone, and all kinds of things. My Dr. did suggest I try the injection but I just read up on that and OMG the side affects are horrendous. I don't know what to do but I am deathly afraid of going on these meds.

Doctors push the drugs (especially drugs for osteoporosis) "just because". Also, they get a nice kickback from the drug companies. I would never take Prolia - have heard some terrible permanent side-effects. How do you know you will get worse without their drugs? Try naturopathic medicine - I did and did extremely well, without the use of prescriptions.

@jubilant wrote:Years ago they put me on Fosamax. It really did a number on my stomach. I was in my 50's then. I went off of it. I am now 70 and with exercises known to help osteoporosis, my numbers (last I was checked) have not gotten any worse so I have maintained that same number for 20 yrs. Every case is different but this is what has worked for me.
@jubilant would you mind sharing what those exercises are, or pointing me to where I can find them online?
Thank you.

Thanks to all who responded. I've got a lot to think about before I make a decision.
Not sure what I will do, but having just come back from a trip to the grocery store, I know for SURE I won't be taking this medication any longer.
I was limping the whole time, and the pain was so distracting.
I do take Calcium, was a runner for years, now I spin every day. Overall, I'm extremely healthy and just turned 70.
I'm sure there are other exercises I can identify to help, so I'll be thinking about that before my next trip to the doctor.
Having suffered with migraines for years, I have a pretty high tolerance to pain, but this has been overwhelming. The medication is the ONLY thing that changed in my life, so I'm drawing a line from my pain to the pills.
I'm not against medications by any means, so will explore other options.

I am so sorry for the ordeal you went through and am glad you are better.
I really do hope after the Zometa was discontinued that your doctors continued to help with the original problem. It seemed to me that you found an effective solution on your own, which is great but concerning, if your doctors left you without any alternate solutions.

Thank you for your kind words. I've managed to get my health in almost perfect order. I'm 65 and I don't need or take any Rx meds...I don't need them according to my docs and my blood tests and scans back that up, too. I have a clean bill of of health!
ETA- I was sick in the hospital with covid back in April and that put some scarring in my lungs. But the effects, though still with me, are not requiring me to take any meds for it. TG!

I rushed through the responses when I first stopped back.
In rereading your note, I am horrified at what you went through. I cannot imagine the pain you went through and then surgery! Good heavens.
If I might ask, what is the silica you take. After the experience I had, I'm really not sure what I will do if I cannot find something nonmedical.
I'm glad you are doing better!

While everyone's medical situation is different, I use Prolia for osteoporosis and have seen much improvement on my Dex scans.
It's an injection that I receive every 6 months and I have absolutely no side effects from it.
The manufacturer has a program to assist with co-pays or if you're Medicare eligible, there is a Grant program that can help with the co-pays.
Talk to your Dr. and discuss the alternative treatments with them.
I take Prolia too, after seeing no improvement with Actonel, Fosamax, and Boniva. Prolia greatly improved my bone mass, with no apparent side effects. I stopped taking it for about 10 months (missed app'mts for a variety of reasons) and the bone mass declined again. My doctor put me right back on it, and we expect to see improvement on my next DEXA.

I'd be more "deathly afraid" of osteoporosis, which -- left untreated -- can result in bone breakage and worse. Please reconsider Prolia, esp. since your doctor recommended it. Any med can cause side effects and still be well worth taking.

Thank you @Witchy Woman
I take a silica supp called bamboo (silica) extract powder. I buy it from Amazon. It's made by Bulksupplements (one word) company. At this very moment the smaller sizes are out of stock but here's the item number so you can look at the product: B01LVTJFVV
You only need one heaping 1/4-teaspoon daily. It's a fluffy white powder, mixes easily in most any liquid and has no discernible flavor. I mix mine in with my 'green' drink once a day.
You can also look around and find capsules of silica, too.

After seeing my mom, I do want to deal with my bones.
Been through Fosamax, Reclast and now on Prolia. Still working on getting any reading lower than 4.1.
Actually I am on drugs with worse side effects, so I just carry on.
I have warned my DDs since it seems to run in families.
