@Kachina624 wrote:@qvcaddition. If you'll read your responses carefully, you'll see several people mention taking the anti-viral with no side effects.
Hard to believe you'd delay medical treatment due to a social funcction.
Posters spent a lot of time relating their experiences. READ THEM!
Hey I remember you. Still snappy. I missed last MD and I'm 88. Didn't want to miss this one. Who knows if I will have another.
I started taking the pill this morning, SO I HAVE READ THE REVIEWS.
Problem is I told my Dr. about the itchy and burning on my scalp months ago and she did nothing. Said is was from the nerves in my neck, bone on bone.
When it felt worse, no pain, no scabes, just burning and itchy, I begged for a appt. even a phone appt. Could get neither. She said email her. I did and told her again. No answer, but got an appt May 6th. I asked aroung april 6th.
So read carefully what I orginally said on my first post.
I am having a reaction from the pill. Very tired, which I wasn't before and now my back hurts and have chills. Very hot outside and in the 70's in the house.
Glad to see you haven't lost your spunk.

Hi @qvcaddition ,
I just saw your posts now.
To answer your question again...
No, I did not have any problems with taking the antiviral medication.
Our primary care doctor gets booked up really fast where it's difficult to get an appointment to see her.
Like you, I'd have to wait for weeks to see her--sometimes a month or longer.
I pretty much have to expect to go to the hospital's Urgent Care Clinic for medical help instead if something happens where I become ill unexpectedly and I think that I need some kind of medical care that can't wait.
I'll just go over there to Urgent Care and wait to be seen there. It's walk in. They don't take take any appointments, and they'll determine if they can help you or if you need care at the ER Department instead.
The Urgent Care Clinic is inside of the hospital in a large separate area where the doctor's offices are also located nearby, so if we go to Urgent Care for help, the doctor will know about it.
@qvcaddition,I'm editing my post to add that everyone can have different side-effects from both Shingles and from the antiviral medication.
I took the antiviral medication with food since I can get an upset stomach/nauseated easily enough.
I also will ask a Pharmacist about the most common side-effects from a prescription medication that's new for me so that I'm less likely to be surprised by any side-effect that might happen while I'm taking the medication.
I would recommend contacting your doctor's office if you think something might be wrong--from either the Shingles or from the antiviral medication.
I hope that you feel better soon. XOXO

I had the Shingles vaccine last year and still got Shingles. The "banging" headaches were awful ! I know it wasn't as bad as it could have been if I hadn't had the vaccine but getting on Gabapentin as soon as diagnosed helped me alot. I would not delay taking medications for that virus.

@qvcaddition. Yes, I was tempted to mention how your doctor disregarded your condition. Surely she could have suggested an alternative like urgent care, the ER, another doctor.
I'm glad you started the meds and hope you'll feel better soon. Your current condition may be due to the shingles, not the medication. Good luck with the brunch.

I got shingles in the 80's when I was in my mid 30's.
I thought I had ringworm but finally went to the dr.
I ended up taking the meds twice since the first batch didn't help. It took a long time to recover. I have nerve pain but it's more from the lyme disease I ended up with in the 90's.
I don't get the shot or any shot other than the covid.
I had no side effects taking the shingles meds and worked thru the whole thing.
Good luck and feel better.

To all. Thank you for your replies.
Because of neck pain, everyone including Dr. Said from the neck. I really didn't have pain, pain. JUst tenderness on the right side of skull.
I even had my hair done this week. My hairdresser didn't see anything. Family said chemicals. I did all my regular work in garden and house and shopping and exercise. Sleep good at night. That's why it was a shock.
I'm not tired now, got my second wind.
I thought of going to urgent care, but it didn't bother me that much.
I guess you would call me a Hard Head.
Well hope the meds work. I might have to take a second round. Will see in seven days.
I will post results when meds are finished. Thanks again for advice and info.

My husband got shingles about 12 years ago when we were at at the Delaware Beaches. He was miserable no sun or pool. Lucky he was not in pain. It turns out that both the urgent care and later the Doctors office where he got the fists shot did not take our insurance. We were out to the turn of $400 I felt miserable for him, the week we looked forward to all year was sort of ruined. He would sit on the covered patio and I would take a swim in the afternoon. It was not happiness but we made the best of it

@Kachina624 wrote:Many times it's important anti-viral meds be taken within a specified time from the onset of the disease.

Kachina is absolutely correct. Anti-virals catch it early before it spreads. If you wait with your meds and let the infection progress the severity may very well be worse.
My sister has recurring lip herpes and as soon as she feels a tingling, she starts the anti-viral immediately and it stops it from worsening into a full blown lesion.

I would have if my Dr. had paid attention to my complaints about my head.
Have been on it for three days now and feels better.
