It depends, emmiesmom. I had it several years ago, and it pretty much cleared up and all symptoms went away within a month. Other people have lingering pain and have to go on other medication to control that for awhile. I would see your doctor if I were you. Good luck...it is one miserable malady to have!

My son had shingles on his face and eye a few years ago. He had lingering nerve pain for several months and even has some scarring. I have read that different people have different experiences. I will pray for your pain to subside. After all, you have Emmie to look after!

My doctor said one reason it's iimportant to get medical care quickly when symptoms show up is that the nerve damages can be permanent.

I hope you feel better soon OP.

I had shingles in 2009. Dr. said I didn't get them very bad because I am on 9 meds daily anyhow so that protected me. Hope you get over everything very soon.

You may be experiencing postherpetic neuralgia which sometimes occurs after shingles. I had a severe case of shingles many years ago and had neuralgia for several months post shingles. I hope your pain goes away quickly. There are meds to lessen the symptoms.

I have had shingles twice, the first time I was in my late 30's seemed every time I got nervous the pain would come back, last year I was 68 and got shingles again, the pain is really bad, each time I went to the doctor.

Good luck, I think everyone is different.

Sorry you got shingles. It's one nasty disease. I had shingles more than 10 years ago. When I get stressed or fatigued, I get pain pricks along my waist where I had shingles. I take it as a warning that I need to destress and take care of myself. They've never come back but I've gotten those warning pains many times.

my mom had shingles about 10 years ago or so and hers lasted about 6 months with all of the symptoms. she now has it again and it is not as bad (she did have the shot), but still a lot "itching" and a large rash mostly on her middle back that comes around to part of her stomach.

I've heard that nerve pain can persist long after the blisters heal, and it especially affects older populations. I had shingles around age 40. It wasn't bad at all. Very little pain. The only problem I had was a swollen lymph node in my groin. It went away in 2 days on its own. I was very fortunate because I have heard horror stories of people with shingles. It seems like there is no one course the disease takes. Now that I know what the symptoms look like if it ever happens again I will get to the Dr. ASAP. By the time I got on the anti viral meds, the shingles was already 3 days into its flare up. Mine started with two welts that looked like spider bites. I thought I was bitten by something, then it ran down my right leg and it was too late to do anything. Doctor put me on Valtrex I believe for 5 days. Big blue horse pills and have me some ointment.
