We are not Catholic as I have said numerous times, my Dad is my responsiblity and I can not push that off on some one else
@AuntG wrote:@I am still oxox, I'm feeling bad for you. With no family or friends, I don't know who you could ask for help. Don't know if you belong to a church, but sometimes there are announcements made at our church where help is requested and someone will volunteer their skills - even if it was running errands or getting meals to your father.

Rehab for hips and such is not done it is only for knees under some circumstances, such as a person lving alone
@ashleigh dupray wrote:ask the insurance compant what is provided for rehab. did your husband have any sort of rehab after the hip replacement? my mother had a fractured femur and Dominican Sisters came for 4 weeks after. now she has had her hip replaced and they come in again 2x per week. they do the PT piece, check vitals and the incision.
NOW i know you do not have MEDICARE, but your insuranceprovider and the Ortho surgeon should have an aftercare plan in place. there are risks such as Falls after hip surgery . that is why rehab is important. did theynot discuss with you? if they did not its your insurance $$$ make them work for you
actually my mother spent 10 days in rehab after her hip replacement.
after her femur was pinned she rehabbed at home with the Dominicans coming in.
sorry about your sitiuation. how are you able get out to care for your father ?
For your Dad: NY has an excellent system of community outreach for seniors . Contact your County Office for the Aging. . there will likely be a wait for an intake worker. there are agencies who work with the State to provide certain services. may take some of the burden off you

My mother spent six weeks in the inpatient rehab facility after she broke her hip and had to have it replaced. She was in her early 80s. No comorbid conditions except mild thyroid deficiency. It was an uncomplicated break and an uneventful replacement and recovery.
I don't know if the age makes any difference, but I coached my neighbor through her knee replacement rehab when she was in her early 60s, so I thought not. I also thought all major joint replacements required rehab in order to maximize strength and range of motion down the line.
Come to think of it, my mother had great medical coverage at the time, and so did my neighbor. I'd hate to think insurance is making the difference.

@RedTop wrote:I am 61 and my husband is 65. I fully understand the situation you are in right now, and urge you and your husband to use this current situation to develop your Plan B, because what you are experiencing now is but a tip of the iceberg of what's coming as you age.
I started this year with intentions of having my second knee surgery in April. I cleaned house, stocked months worth of food, had everything planned out to the nth degree, and then had to cancel my surgery to take care of my husband after an injury. He urged me to go ahead with the surgery, but in good conscience I could not. I am not incapacitated with my knee, and am well able to help my husband right now. He on the other hand is not physically able to help me with my needs after knee replacement---other than drive me to therapy. I had to remind him of where he is physically right now, and where I'll be when I am discharged from the hospital, to make him realize my surgery has to wait. We cannot both be incapacitated, since our girls are not home long enough to be of much help right now, but do have siblings and friends nearby.
Earlier this week I had a big discussion with my 77 year old cousin and his 73 year old wife about their Plan B. My cousin is experiencing progressive memory issues and has early stage macular degeneration. His wife has had 3 falls in a few short months, which has raised some concerns as to what is going on with her, and she also does not drive. Their only child lives 3 hours away, and works 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week, in a traveling job. They have given no thought to moving closer to their child, or selling the house and going into assisted living.
Putting a plan in place is much easier when both of you are able to express your desires about what you want and need, to make your life easier---before something happens.
Well, some people's plan is to be healthy and live to 105 and then drop dead in their sleep. Their plan B is to let their kids take care of whatever happens. It seems to work out fine for them. . .

Actually Rehab for hip surgeries begins the day after surgery.

I'm sorry for your situation. Rehab is done after hip replacement surgery though. My friend had a hip replacement and went straight to a rehab facility from the hospital. I don't understand why the hospital didn't look into this for your husband.

@I am still oxox I am sorry for your situation. Sometimes when our choices are limited, changing our perspective is our last resort in order to have some peace and joy. I wish I could talk to you and also share what I'm dealing with. I, too, have no family for support. I always keep in mind that our experiences make us who we are, and how we respond to them are a measure of what we have learned. It is this thought that allows me to carry on. That, and knowing that my goal is to choose kindness and compassion no matter how challenging. Sending you much love and light, I truly understand your trials.

Perhaps something about your husband's hip replacement was different, but according to Harvard Medical School rehab is necessary. http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/physical-therapy-hip-replacement-can-rehab-happen-home-2016051195...
I did a Google search, and every article I found said it is necessary. I just feel for you having to take care of him and was hoping there was a way for you to get help. It seems like it will be a slow recovery without any rehab.
