Thank you for sharing your husband's experience. I drink a gallon of water a day and am in excellent health. I take a # of supplements and have always understood that good hydration should be able to flush out any possible UTI's. I've never had one to this point and hope I don't have one now. If I do, however, I have gotten enough info from these excellent responses to my post to offer a # of options to my PCP for a conservative approach to whevever he thinks is going on rather than jumping to an antibiotic.

Look into Olive Leaf Extract and or Grapefruit seed extract.

I take D-Mannose (no other ingredients) to help prevent recurrent UTIs:
1,500 mg per day is the recommended dosage.
My favorite is 'Now D-Mannose 500 mg Capsules' ; I take 3 capsules in the A.M. .
Works very well.

Why would you not take something that will fix the problem in a reseaonable amount of time? UTI's are miserable!!! Just because you have no symptoms now, when they show up you will know it!! I prefer not to suffer any more than necessary.

@feline groovy I just came from the doctor's office. I do NOT have a UTI.
He went over my last 3 yrs of labs, including my kidney and liver readings. Similar urine analysis findings were present for all that time. My kidney/liver findings were also similar. Therefore, an antibiotic is uncalled for at this time.
He also mentioned taking D-Mannose as a good way to prevent any UTI's in the future.
QUESTION: I read that some people have stomach upsets and other side effects from taking D-Mannose. Have you experienced any that you would care to share with me? Thank you!

@pdlinda :
Good to hear you don't have an infection.
I've been taking D-mannose daily for years without any negative effects.
It should be noted that not everyone gets side effects from it; most don't.
But I do take everything (supplements, o.t.c. meds, and RX meds) with food because I have GI conditions and a sensitive stomach. It's important to eat some food first and then take the capsule.
I just take the D-mannose at breakfast along with my other stuff.
Makes it easy to get that daily dosage out of the way first thing.
If you prefer, you can also split the dosage by taking one capsule 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch, & dinner) or with a snack instead.
I had many UTI's over the decades (usually several per year) and tried everything to help prevent them. I wish I had discovered D-mannose earlier in my research, but I'm so thankful regardless as it does help with prevention.

I didn't read all the other responses.
D-Mannose. Forget Ocean Spray cranberry juice.....it is full of sugar.
If you are prone to UTI's, you take this long term as a preventive.
@JeanLouiseFinch I am sorry to hear you are going through this. I pray that it gets resolved quickly. UTI's are not fun. Waiting out test results is worse.

Agree - if it's sweet and not extremely tart, it's not for health purposes.

@OneHappyHiker I have IBS (mixed type) that I've managed for 35 yrs. Keeping my digestive tract healthy is of paramount importance to me. That's because I don't want to spend excessive time in the bathroom.
I'm reading about D-Mannose and note that some experience side effects, including diarrhea/constipation. Also, stomach upset.
Have you experienced side effects from taking D-Mannose? Thank you.

@pdlinda I regularly take a good probiotic as do you, and also D-Mannose. D-Mannose is an essential supplement to keep from getting a UTI. UTI's are somewhat commom as we age due to declines in our hormones. Read about this supplement and you will understand it's purpose. I do believe it can be used once you have one as well in higher doses, but good for prevention.
