@pdlinda I understand your concern but I believe that to completely get rid of an UTI you do need antibiodics.
If you have no symptoms, you don't know how serious it is or how long you may have had it!
Some years ago, I requested a urine test because it was clear! If it filters, why clear? The doctor was iffy but I said my insurance would pay for it...just do it! He did.
When it was cultured, the Doctor said I had one of the worse UTIs he had ever seen. HE COULD NOT BELIEVE I HAD NO PAIN!
I took 50 500 mg Ampicillin to get rid of it...but I've never had another one!
Please take the antibiotics. The ones that kill UTI bacteria are not the really bad ones. Take probiotics with it!
I would not play around with home remedies, especially being elderly...it's harder to fight "bugs" off! Take care of it, it can cause other problems!

I haven't had any side effects from taking D-Mannose (and I do to so many things).
But as others say and my son always says, take any supplements, vitamins etc with food. Just easier on the stomach![]()

@pdlinda A few things tumbling around in my head... I'm so happy you do NOT have a UTI! I also love when doctors compare past years' test results to current ones because it shows the trend in any given result. I also don't know if you even want to go down the daily supplementation route OF taking D-Mannose or any other supplement specifically as a preventative for a UTI since you never even had one. It's like if it isn't broken, you really have nothing to fix lol. The reason I began taking it is because I DID have a UTI and didn't want to go down that route again.
Next up... D-Mannose and GI upsets and me... NO. I do NOT get any GI upsets from taking D-Mannose. I don't have IBS BUT I do have a sensitive stomach which is sensitive to supplements. That's why Andrew Lessman's Essential's Daily has been my go-to for a daily supplement. So because of my sensitive stomach, if and when I begin something new, I begin with the lowest dose possible to give me a *feel* if anything negative is occurring. Like you, I really do watch what and when I eat.
Since you have mixed-type IBS, I would definitely read all about D-Mannose and IBS to see what you might expect as a side effect. Then if you decide to take it, limit it to a single ingredient: D-Mannose (may include any other ingredients you know you can handle like Vit C, etc.). I always take the lowest amount possible for at least a few solid days to see how my body reacts to any new supplement. Then, go ahead and add more if you tolerate it well.
For me, I divide the two caps daily between breakfast and lunch. So many good replies on here explained how they take it. I agree with posters that I also take any supplement (unless specifically stated not to do so) after eating SOME food, then supplements, then more food. I never end a meal with supplements and never begin with them. Again, unless meds are needed that require to be taken without food.
Stay well!

False - antibiotics are not the only option.
And it only makes sense to take probiotics AFTER you finish the antibiotics. If the anti's kill everything off, you're just wasting your money.

I read several years ago that taking probiotics with antibiotics is no longer recommended as it had been for years. Instead to take them after finishing the antibiotics.
I never understand why more new findings are not more widely publicised. The same as when it was published that excessive amounts of calcium, previously said to be so beneficial to bones, can cause heart problems for women. But even my mother knew about that. I guess to widely publish it would hurt the profits of many companies that make billions off of supplements.
Our FDA does seem to be behind on many things but that is another story altogether.
Every supplement, vitamin, and rx should be carefully researched by ourselves before taking. What is good for one person may not be for another.
Many ingredients in skin, makeup and supplements that are banned in Europe are still used in our country and deemed to be "safe."Big example is the ingredients in sunscreen designed to prevent skin cancer and have carcinogenic ingredients in them!
Sorry to go off on a tangent. I just never understand how this can be allowed but I guess so many things are really all about the profit$.

I think too many "research" the company that makes the med and not a reliable medical source! Of course the one they make is
the best one ever!
"Taking probiotics while on antibiotics does not significantly boost beneficial gut bacteria, according to new research. The findings debunks the previous notion that it's important to take probiotics along with antibiotics, when prescribed, to maintain the gut's microbiome.Sep 15, 2023" (don't know the source-just google?)
Doesn't say it keeps it from all being deleted! Just doesn't BOOST the amount!

the "alternative" is an even worse and more painful UTI.
