Sweet Charlotte: There are a number of statins on the market and many of them (I have heard) do cause aches and pains so switching to another one is very hit or miss. When my sister started on a statin a few years ago (I'm sorry I don't know which one) she had very bad leg pains. Her doctor told her to stop taking the statin for two weeks to see if they went away, and they did. He then put her on Atorvastatin (generic of Lipitor) and she has not had any problems since. I also take Atorvastatin and it works well for me, too. I am just mentioning this as a possibility for you to try.
There are a number of good suggestions here for the natural types and I have been interested in trying these myself for a while now. However, my cholesterol is hard to control - even though I truly watch my diet - so I just don't have the courage to change right now.
I hope you find something that works well for you.

I was on Simvastatin for 18 months not recognizing that the muscle ache/burn/electric zings in my muscles might be due to the med. I could barely pull myself up into our motorhome, could no longer open bottles of water. And I was active... I still taught Karate 3 days a week but had to take time off, had no idea why my muscles were doing this. I went to my doctor who denied it could be the newest med I was on..... long story short I started researching Statins and became alarmed after being turned on to a website run by an ex-Astronaut and DOCTOR called Spacedoc.com. He became permanently crippled from the Statins he was encouraged to take. And he's been on line trying to educate ever since.
I decided to titrate down and stop the Simvastatin on my own. I felt good in no time and I regained almost all my leg and arm strength but my full strength has never come back and I continued my Karate training to try and maximize results.
We moved across country and I went to a new doctor and she prescribed a new statin, one I was told was water based and therefore would probably not affect me. It did affect me in three days, so I went off it immediately. She's now talking about Zetia and I don't like what I'm reading about it at all.....
Paleo diet?? I've already made a lot of changes in that direction, and I've given up a lot in my life the last ten years because I'm Diabetic... all I can say is "jeeze".... not easy....
