@LTT1 I read the label on Nighttime before I bought it to be sure it was not just Melatonin, which didn't work for me.

@chrystaltree What is a healthy sleep habit? I am active all day, very tired when I go to bed, fall asleep, then have to get up later, go back to bed, and no sleep for hours. There is no control over a situation like that.
I had sleep problems and I saw a Sleep specialist. At the time I was only getting 5 hours of a sleep a night and I suspected that was the cause of my chronic headaches and other physical issues. This was about 15 years ago, the doctor I saw called it a "prescription" and it worked.
I removed the tv from our bedroom because having a tv in the room, meant that I'd watch it before bedtime and I'd put it on when I woke up in the middle of the night. I had to reserve the bedroom for sleep and avoid watching tv an hour before bedtime. The "blue light" from tv screens does affects the brain which can affect sleep and also watching upsetting or exciting or violent tv can prevent sleep for hours.
I was told to keep the room a little cool, not cold but cool. Being too hot can interfere with sleep but so can cold feet, so I started sleeping with sox on.
Keep regular sleep hours, 7 days a week. Get 7-8 hours (no less, no more) a night and get up and go to bed at the same time.
On the nights when I could not fall asleep, I was told to get up and do something soothing, like read a book or listen to music or knit or paint. Something relaxing but never stay in bed tossing and turning and trying to force sleep. Once I was drowsy, I could go back to bed to sleep.
I didn't try it but some people sleep better if they have some protein before bed. Not a big meal but some yogurt of a piece of cheese or turkey slices.
The 7-8 hours was the hardest for me, I'd always prided myself on not needing a lot of sleep. It took practice but I get 7 hours of quality sleep every night. It's automatic now.
There were some other things that didn't apply or work for me, I don't remember what but I followed my "prescription". Like most people, there is that occasional night, sometimes two that I can't fall asleep and I can't even get drowsy and that's when I discovered that Benedryl helps.
@chrystaltreethanks for posting this information....I am always on the lookout for trying to figure out how I can get quality sleep. Most nights I fall asleep ok but then I wake up to roll over say from ear pain or my arm I am sleeping on (side sleeper) is hurting and of course I need to use the bathroom!
I will add your tips to try for myself starting tonight....if you think of anything else please share again.
Also was the sleep specialist one of those doc's that you go see to have a sleep study done?? I haven't done one...yet...something I will be talking to my doc about in April if I am not sleeping better by then.
You're welcome, I hope it helps. You have to experiment to find out what works for you. Yes, I did see a specialist in the Sleep Dept of a hospital. They do Sleep Studies there but in my case after looking at my medical history and reviewing the form I had to fill out; he wanted to try the above because he thought I had poor sleep habits and not any type of sleep disorder.

It makes me dizzy...even 1mg...wish I could use it.
Ditto ..... and it's a fairly common side effect. That's why I asked what the ingredients were. I won't take anything with melatonin in it.

You have listed excellent suggestions. I suffer from Parasomnia, for me it manifests as night terrors. Before I was referred to a sleep therapist I would also try to jump out of bed and run. (LOL) A few years ago I awoke on my bedroom floor with no idea how I got there and had injured my arm.
Everyone has to tweak to find what works well for them and I have my formula that helps me. I still watch TV in bed, but I can't fall asleep with the TV on, guarantee that I will wake up and see huge spiders on my walls. Screeming, gasping for breath. I remember my Doctor telling me about the blue light as well and even though you think you are sleep your brain is still active and reacting to the TV.
I keep a fan running in my room to keep the room cool, not cold. I also need the white noise. I am a light sleeper to boot so I can't hear the house settling at night it will keep me up.
No caffeine after 12 noon for me.
I try to keep regular sleep hours and max out at 7.
I occasionally use the AL supplement to help me sleep better.

I use this for times I can't fall asleep and it works great.

@highmaintenancejan. I used to take an antihistamine, but doc suggested Melatonin. She said antihistamines are for allergies can have a rebound effect and eventually give you a chronic stuffed nose.

Can you take melotonin or do you every night.? How about waking up to go to the bathroom at night? I am having trouble hearing attic noises--ac not on but ? no man hears it just clock ticking. Worn out by all of this. My cat gives me some comfort but otherwise all alone with all of this. Oh I forgot is melatonin addictive? How long does it take before it works?

@halfpint1 No problem with the Nighttime, I get up several times every night with my dogs, and go right back to sleep, no dizziness, etc.
