SIL and BIL receiving vaccine

Just found out that my sister in law and brother in law received their 1st dose of the vaccine weeks ago and are getting 2nd shot this week. They are in their 70's and the state where they live are only vaccinating 80 and above. When I asked her how they were able to get it she said they "cheated" and said they were caregivers.  They are not.  Everyday in the hospital we have people come in and give heartbreaking stories about themselves or their elderly parents and why they need the vaccine. We have to turn them away because it's not available to the public yet. I am very upset that my SIL and BIL would do this. They are not the type of people, I thought, who would. They just received doses that could have gone to two 80 plus people who are eligible. Sorry, just had to get this off my chest.

@LuvmyLab I would be disgusted too. And it seems they *are* "that kind of people." The kind who cheat and lie for their own benefit. I'd personally tell them exactly what I thought of their behavior and why. And if they don't like it, tough noogies. I loathe the people who have been doing this.

Re: SIL and BIL receiving vaccine

By age and work, I will not be eligible for the vaccine for a while.  My DM is mid-80s and only wants to go to a location that is easy to get to and has no lines. She will wait at home until that is available.  My young nieces are nurses and received the vaccine last month. DH should be able to get his next month due to his work.

I do not monitor  or care who gets the vaccine when or why or where. Every state is different, circumstances are different, and people's fear levels are different.

At least your SIL and BIL trust you enough to share their acts.  Rather than be disappointed with them, have sympathy that their anxiety made them take this step.

Some young people would not really think there is much difference between those who are in their seventies versus their eighties--both are elderly when one is decades younger.

Hopefully we will all be vaccinated by Fall!

@FancyPhillyshopper  I also hope that everyone who wants to be will be vaccinated by this Fall.  With Pfizer ramping up production I am hopeful that this will happen.

Re: SIL and BIL receiving vaccine

Frankly, by now there was likely enough vaccine for the most vulnerable age 65  and older if the CDC and States had not included giving it to younger people under age 65 .

A simple serum antibody test  for those less than  say 50  to check to see who has already had the virus  would have  saved many  doses of the vaccine  for those over age 65.  The CDC ended up having dumb guidelines  and the States  didn't do much better  by both setting up so many barriers for  the vulnerable to receive the vaccine . Also all kinds of Politicians, Administrators,  and people with political pool made sure they  had the vaccine first . I think it has been  horrid that people in their 70's , 80's , 90's who have been living at home had to wait wait wait for the vaccine .

@FancyPhillyshopper

And you know that was why they chose to "cut the line", how again?

"Some young people would not really think there is much difference between those who are in their seventies versus their eighties--both are elderly when one is decades younger."

And why am I suppose to care what "young people think"?  I can tell you, and these young'ens, that there was a big difference, between my 70's and 80's. And these "young people" somehow know how the decades change their elders from decade to decade, how?

You don't care who gets the vaccine when/why or where? I do care, and I have never been one to not tell anyone how i feel. Not in social media, but to their face, when they "lie" to benefit themselves at the expense of others.

As one obviously older than yourself, I waited until I fell into the group which was eligible. My wife however did not, but because it was the Pfizer vaccine, which needs the -90° to be usable, got her shot.

She chose to come with me for that very reason, which was because of the many cancellations due to weather conditions.

Snow/North winds at 20mph/and a Wind Chill of -35°. She did not "lie" to get the vaccine(she is in her 70's), but was honest, unlike Line Jumpers, and went out in weather, where many chose staying home instead of getting the vaccine.

Naw, it doesn't bother me in the least. They are in their 70's. They should receive the vaccine! Who cares if they get it now or in a month? In the grand scheme of things, we all (those who choose to) will be vaccinated....period.

Re: SIL and BIL receiving vaccine

The elderly, teachers, EMS, police, and other essential workers in my state don't have their vaccines yet because our governor gave doses to big business donors to give to their employees. I am older and eligible for vaccinations and it's been a real struggle to get an appointment.

It is so hit or miss and often a buddy deal where you have to know somebody who can get you in, give you advance information, or somehow make a connection.

The whole distribution system is a mess and a joke in some places.
