Happy daze.....your mom sounds like a gem. I never tell anyone what my pain level is even though my dh, and close friends know.

I do do not think too many rheumatologists are big on alternative care...mine always tells me to try and if it works, good.

Your mom is a special lady.

@sydsgma1 thank you so much! I certianly think she is a special lady and a gem. She means the world to me. I just wish I could take away her pain. I am sorry you are going through this too. I wish there was more that can be done for RA sufferers. Wishing you only good health and pain free days!

@JCF@HappyDaze

I've had RA for 12 years now and am on prednisone (which, as you said, aggravated my osteoporosis).  I was always criticized for not taking biologics, but never had any joint replacement surgeries.  I did have kyphoplasty in two vertebrae in my back caused by osteoporosis.

The biologics are supposed to keep the RA at bay, and yet your poor mom had to have multiple joint surgeries anyway, so I'm not sorry I never took them, given the serious side effects.

I do have back pain every day and sometimes take Tylenol for Arthritis with the prednisone when the pain in too bad (like today).  I also fell and broke my shoulder two months ago, so I'm wearing a brace for that.  I can't remember the last time I did not have pain.  I do get relief lying down at night.

Other than opiod pain killers, which I also will not take, I don't think there's much else one can do.

My sympathies to you, @JCF at the loss of your mom, and I can certainly empathize with @HappyDaze's mom.

@LilacTree  that is just one person's experience though- My mom has been on biologics for at least 15 years and she's never had to have any joint surgeries.  The biologics saved her joints in a huge way and the biologics were a miracle for her for both pain and to save her joints. There are so many biologics options now and some are much safer than others. She is late 60's.

@HappyDaze

I'm sorry, I did get the two of you mixed up.  Please accept my apologies.  I tried to fix it at the end but as I reread it, it turned out confusing.

I should have deleted it and started over.  Again, I apologize.

I have also been on prednisone for years for my RA....i did try the biologics....Humira for 2 years...helped..but then didn't seem to work very well...  was able to cut

down the prednisone while taking Humira but then when i went off the Humira ..back to prednisone only...then Enbrel...didn't work, etc....now in between and waiting to see what the next choice will be to help me get off the prednisone...nothing seems to work as well with me as the prednisone....haven't found anything else that works...

no reason to apologize @LilacTree. Just wanted to be sure it was clear that my mom has not had to have any joint surgeries and actually has been doing really well on biologics overall.

Have you had your Vitamin D3 levels checked?  My neighbor has awful arthritis and doubled her intake of D3 and for the first time could close her hand into a fist.

@hoosieroriginal it might help if you tag the person you are directing this question to?

@HappyDaze - should be clear I was responding to the OP - she's the one who asked the original question.

Re: Rheumatoid arthritis- suggestions to help ease aches/pain

I have the autoimmune disease scleroderma. It has grossly affected my joints all over my body but mostly my hands. I live with chronic pain.

Long story short...turmeric works for many, but not all. It is a good anti-inflam and natural pain killer. Be sure to check with a professional before ingesting and make certain that anything you take will not interfere with pre-existing meds.

That being said and I know there are some here who will disagree with anything I or anyone writes, but please read what Dr. Weil has to say about turmeric on his website. It will at least give some info about the sup.
