Getting a flu shot for some people is a personal choice they make. Whether or not a person gets one is none of my business and I don't criticize anyone if they choose not to get one. If you are in a situation where you need a shot to protect others then get one...it's a totally unselfish and sometimes required thing to do.

I don't think calling someone "stupid" because they feel they are doing the best for themselves is a good idea.

I've been back and forth about getting a flu vaccine.  I am 70, in good health and have never had the flu.  Considering that the flu vaccine, as I understand it, is at best 50% effective and that there can be serious side effects from getting the vaccine, I am still undecided.

I stay away from people, keep my hands away from my face and wash my hands frequently.

Agree. It's as if ten years ago or so when someone first coined the 'can't fix stupid' mantra, some folks found it cute and vowed to use it every chance they get. For me, it's been run in the ground and now sounds, well, rather stupid in its own right...

Whether or not to get the shot is an individual choice. I get it annually and one year I did get sick. My assumption is that whatever I had was brewing when I got the shot, not that the shot made me ill, but there are a lot of people who are literally paranoid about the shot. It seems silly to me, but it's their choice. It's not foolproof, but is another tool in the arsenal so I get it...

I got mine a few weeks ago because quite clearly all the hand washing, masking wearing and social distancing wouldn't appear to have done much to positively impact our current situation... And while it's true that not everyone is complying, on the rare occasions I venture out, I'm seeing more who are than who aren't, and yet we're still being held hostage by the seeming inabilty to get this mess under control, so not sure it's going to help keep down the flu numbers either...

On the advice of my dr I don't get a flu shot because of my auto immune disorder.

What concerns me is that people get their immunizations on the advice of advertising and not a consult with their dr.

What's new this year is the appearance of a new heavy duty flu shot for those over 65. The marketing is well, more is better!

@Snowpuppy , I am in the same boat so my doctor told me to always be sure it is not the live vaccine (inactivated).

ETA:  Mine is not an autoimmune disorder but medication that makes me have  little immune system.

Flu vaccines do not contain live virus.

@Snowpuppy   Flu shot does not do us any good, so no need to get it.  Save it for someone else.

@Nonametoday

I beg to differ, but in DH's case, who has more than 1 autoimmune disorder, his Drs. insist he get the flu shot every year.

And he's never had the flu.

@KingstonsMom   If you will give me your name, I will allow my immunologist, hematologist and endocrinologist to have your name so they can consult with you since they must not know of what they speak.

This is not new this year.  The senior dose has been around for quite some time now.

Sorry, but we aren't all wearing masks and social distancing. Nose exposers abound. And people who only pull up their masks when they have to. (The other day, even I went around for a short period of time wearing a valved N95 mask that I did not realize could have put people at risk if I'd been infected.) And then there's those folks who just flout all the rules all the time, though there are less of them these days.

If you got the flu, wouldn't you be worried at first that it might be Covid? If you could catch the one you could just as easily catch the other. Some overlap in symptoms, such as a fever. You'd have to go get Covid and Flu tested while feeling like death warmed over. The flu is horrible in its own right and can develop into pneumonia and bronchitis. It's worth it to get a shot just to avoid all that hassle.

That's not what I said at all, just that not all autoimmune diseases are the same and YOUR OWN Dr. should decide whether a patient should get one or not based on their particular autoimmune disease(s) and health in general.

DH has the same specialists that you listed and they all AGREED that HE should get the flu shot.

The snark response wasn't necessary.
