It was suggested to me to rent a recliner chair for recovery time for hip replacement.  Has anyone done this and are they very helpful the first few weeks after surgery?

Re: Recliner chair/hip surgery

A recliner was suggested for my total knee replacement, I absolutely love it and I'm using it way beyond recovery. Get a really good one, I have a lazy boy and it is amazing. I've never been one to like recliners but I changed my mind. I hope your surgery goes well and you have a easy recovery.

@bargainsgirl  I lived in my recliner after my second hip surgery.   I did not have one for the first one and I can say it was easier with.   Being a side sleeper, I could not sleep comfortably in bed so slept in the recliner.   Good luck with your surgery.  You will be happy you did it!

Re: Recliner chair/hip surgery

@bargainsgirl I cannot say enough good things about my recliners. Most of them are La-Z-Boy, but one is a lift chair and 2 look like classic wing back chairs. I have major issues with back and leg problems. I will not sit on a couch or sectional. I often slept in my recliner in my bedroom, but not as much since I got my Sleep Number lift bed.

My recommendation is to shop for your recliner in person before your surgery. A recliner is like buying shoes. You need a good fit. My husband's recliner is very uncomfortable for me, but he loves it. Pay the price and get a quality chair. You will enjoy it for years.

I hope your surgery goes well and that you have a quick, easy recovery.

I agree with the other posters, La-Z-Boy are the best.   I have two in the legged accent chair style.    They are very comfortable.   One of the best purchases I made.   Really were perfect when recovering from my hip surgery.

I would suggest buying one outright rather than renting.   I agree with others La Z Boy is the way to go.  If you go to a store they will actually go by your height to help you get the right chair.  We bought one for after my breast cancer surgery as I couldn't sleep on that side or my back for quite awhile.  It was one of the best investments we have made.

I can't address hip surgery, but I can share my close to 30 years of sleeping only in a recliner. Even in my many weeks spent in the hospital, the only time I was in a bed was my 8 days in the ICU. That was my 1st heart attack, where the Aspiration Pneumonia, was what came closer to killing me.

Over those years I have had 2 hernia surgeries/back surgery/6 broken ribs. And getting back to ice skating after 14 years off, at age 78! I have had so many deep hip bone bruises I can't remember the number.

While my hip bone, on both hips, never broke, those deep bruises(yes pain) last at minimum a couple months. That is if I managed to not keep falling on them.

Not a single injury or surgery got me out of sleeping in my recliners. When my wife had her TKR, she started sleeping in our adjustable bed. But she found getting in and out was very hard.

I talked her into trying 1 of our motorized recliners, and it not only made getting in and out much easier. She found the adjustable motorized leg rest allowed her to keep her knees and any angle that felt best.

I also had invasive surgery on my big toe and a broken nose to add to those injuries. As I said, even in my several weeks long hospital stays I slept in a recliner. Needless to say I am high on recliners, even with both hips having deep bone bruises.

I cant speak to hip surgery, but after major back surgery my power recliner was a blessing.

@bargainsgirl   I was told to sit in a straight chair with back, not a recliner.

"Try to sit in a straight back chair (avoid low sofas, recliners, or zero-gravity chairs) for the first 6 weeks. Do NOT sleep in a recliner. Your hip will get stiff in a flexed position and be harder to straighten out. Do not extend your hip or leg backwards for 6 weeks."

Not sure about your "I was told" comment after reading all these posts from others that have hip surgery! My inclination would be to listen to those that have experienced the surgery.

I've had doctors that have told me to do "XYZ" after an invasive procedure, and surgeries. Those doctors had never had the surgery or procedure themselves, so I am guessing they are going by some book or other patients they may have followed.

Had I followed what the doctor that did my 1st hernia surgery? It would have slowed my recovery and also extended my discomfort time when doing certain things. I did what was more comfortable, and I felt that worked much better for me.

Low sofas or chairs I can mechanically follow, be it a knee or a hip. He!! just getting up out of and chair or sofa, never having a surgery, when your knees are even with or above your hips, it is harder for everyone, especially as one ages.

When it comes to weight bearing body parts, I would listen to those that have actually gone through the recovery. As with everything else with the human body, we are not all the same.

Just my thoughts about this topic.
