I can't address hip surgery, but I can share my close to 30 years of sleeping only in a recliner. Even in my many weeks spent in the hospital, the only time I was in a bed was my 8 days in the ICU. That was my 1st heart attack, where the Aspiration Pneumonia, was what came closer to killing me.
Over those years I have had 2 hernia surgeries/back surgery/6 broken ribs. And getting back to ice skating after 14 years off, at age 78! I have had so many deep hip bone bruises I can't remember the number.
While my hip bone, on both hips, never broke, those deep bruises(yes pain) last at minimum a couple months. That is if I managed to not keep falling on them.
Not a single injury or surgery got me out of sleeping in my recliners. When my wife had her TKR, she started sleeping in our adjustable bed. But she found getting in and out was very hard.
I talked her into trying 1 of our motorized recliners, and it not only made getting in and out much easier. She found the adjustable motorized leg rest allowed her to keep her knees and any angle that felt best.
I also had invasive surgery on my big toe and a broken nose to add to those injuries. As I said, even in my several weeks long hospital stays I slept in a recliner. Needless to say I am high on recliners, even with both hips having deep bone bruises.
