Recall of Hyundai and Kia SUVs over chance of fires.

[ Edited ]

Owners are being told to park vehicles outdoors, away from structures. There's some type of problem with the trailer hitch wiring. There are approximately 280,000 vehicles affected. Owners, according to online news articles, are expected to receive letters in OCTOBER!

"Hyundai and Kia have issued recalls for the 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade and 2020-2022 Kia Telluride. The recalls are distinct to each automaker, but the vehicles share many of the same underlying components. Approximately 245,000 Palisades and 36,000 Tellurides are included in these recalls, but the recall focuses primarily on an accessory tow hitch, which not every vehicle has equipped. However, to determine exactly where all these tow hitches are, the recalls will affect all vehicles produced for the aforementioned model years.

According to the recall documents filed with NHTSA, the problem stems from a printed circuit board that's part of the tow hitch assembly. Moisture and foreign-object contamination on the boards may cause them to short circuit, which greatly increases the risk of a vehicle fire. Both automakers first received reports of SUV fires originating from the rear end in early 2021, but neither has received reports of injuries or crashes.

A remedy is not yet available, but both automakers are still working to determine the source of the environmental contaminants that spurred the recall in the first place. Both OEMs are also recommending that customers park their vehicles away from structures until a remedy can be implemented."

Above is quoted from CNET, "Hyundai, Kia Recall nearly 300,000 SUVs for Tow-Hitch Fire Risks," by Andrew Krok, August 23, 2022

Kia and Hyundai are also the vehicles being stolen due to the someone on TikTok showing how to steal them by starting them without a key. There are thousands being stolen and thefts are up over 600% in some large cities. The 2022 models aren't included, but many previous years are. Sounds like the manufacturer needs to go back to the drawing board. I can hear the attorneys running as fast as they can to file the lawsuits.

Just in the past few years, or so, our city building codes for residential houses with garages has changed to accommodate fire-control construction of the insides of garages to make them safe to store anything which might catch fire...like electric vehicles. I kinda saw that coming.

All the houses in our area have natural gas hot water heaters in their garages. With the EV charging panels being installed by many, I can see more codes being added.
