Radiofrequency Ablation In My Back Yesterday

I have had lots of back pain for 15 years or so.  Yesterday I had radiofrequency ablation done on my right side.  In a couple of weeks I will have the left side done.  I really wasn't sure what to expect.  The nurse practitioner told me I would be in pain for about a week.

My appt. was at 1:00 yesterday, and I was really painful the rest of the day.  I went to bed at 7:00 and slept until 6:00 this morning.  Today it is so much better.  It's still painful, but I have hopes that it will be better in a few days.  I'm just hoping for a full or almost full recovery from the daily back pain.  Has anyone had this done?  What was your experience with it?

Re: Radiofrequency Ablation In My Back Yesterday

@NickNack  - I recently had this done on the lower right side of my back.  It's been about 5 weeks and unfortunately I don't feel that the procedure afforded me any relief.  In fact I feel my back pain is worse.  I hope this isn't the case for you.  I still have to do the left side of my lower spine.

I am also in the process of doing the left side of my neck.

Did you have to do 2 sets of preliminary shots to the area before the "formal" ablation?  I did and it just draws the process out incredibly long.  After each prelim series of shots I have to schedule a consult, then, if that gave relief, another set of prelim shots, then another consult, then finally the ablation.  This all stretches the procedure out for several weeks and in fact over a month.  In the meantime I have continued to have pain.

Again, I hope you have better luck than I have had.

Not sure this is the path for me.

Re: Radiofrequency Ablation In My Back Yesterday

@Stevie Nix   I'm so sorry you don't think you've gotten any relief.

I had to go through all that with the two preliminary procedures, too.  I had to wait two weeks after each procedure to have my follow-up, which was completely ridiculous.  Since all it was was an anesthetic injection I could have told them the same thing the next day.  I started this during the summer.

I will have my left side done in a couple of weeks.  I do hope this works for me.  I hope yours changes and you feel you are getting relief.

You will not be free of pain especially if this is due to arthritis.  It will lessen the pain and you will feel some relief.  I find that it's an ongoing process.  Sometimes it works better than others.

@Somertime   Yes, my back pain is primarily from arthritis.  I just hope to be able to be more active.  I have a hard time running more than one or two errands at a time without having to come home and get in bed with the heating pad.

After being in so much pain last night I have to say that I am tremendously better today.  I even went out to run a couple of errands this morning.  I was only gone for about an hour though.  Yesterday I thought I might be in bed for a few days.

I hope it works for you, it's encouraging that you are feeling better today.  It might not completely resolve the pain but it you end up reducing the pain by 75 or 80% and are you regain your mobility and stamina that would be a wonderful thing.

I had about 4 sessions of this procedure about 10 years ago on my lower back.  They gave me no relief whatsoever.

@Kachina624   I'm really sorry the procedures didn't help you.
