@NickNack wrote:Thank you for this information @pupwhipped . I will definitely ask my surgeon my many questions.
Would you have been able to get up and let your dog out four times a day, put food out twice a day for the dog and scoop the litter box at least every other day?
That's what I really need to be able to do, as well as get food for myself. I would not plan on cooking, of course.
@NickNack, yes I think I could have done all those things with the surgery I had. Bending over a lot to do the litter box might be a little difficult. And keep in mind if it's your right foot like mine was you can't drive for quite awhile. I don't exactly remember now but it may have been like a month to six weeks but don't quote me on that. It's hard for me to recall eight years later. With the rigid shoe thing I had you just kinda walk peg leg around so as not to bend the joint. The doc said I could do little things in the house but just try to keep it to a minimum. The first two weeks he wanted it elevated and iced as much as possible. I had really no pain the first week but did start having some the second week. Nothing too bad but it kinda surprised me as the first week was a breeze. But my foot was swollen forever! I remember when they let me out of the rigid shoe they said I could start wearing tennis shoes. I went home and there was no way in heck I could get my tennis shoe on my foot...it was comical! It's a very gradual process of healing and I had tenderness walking like in Walmart on hard floors for a very long time. But all along it got better and better and better.
Wish I was your neighbor as I would gladly come and help you with Ava and Henry. It's sad to think that back when I had my surgery we had FIVE dogs and now we have none.
I was fortunate that my husband took care of the dogs and my biggest job was not letting any of them step on my foot.🐾🦶😩 Good luck with whatever your choose to do!

Thank you very much @Dragonflyveb . This is very helpful. I've copied your post as well as some of the info from the other posts into some notes I'm making for when I have the surgery.
It won't be any time soon. I've still got some other things to work out first.

@pupwhipped It's my right foot. I hadn't thought about that making the time before I could drive be longer.
I understand about trying to keep your dog from stepping on your foot. After I had my hysterectomy many years ago I came home and got in bed. My dog immediately jumped up onto the bed and jumped on my stomach. Oh, that was so painful!

@NickNack, a very similar thing with me, my hysterectomy and my dog. My older dog always had to be helped up on and down from the bed. One morning a few days after surgery out of habit and without thinking I grabbed him to help him. Once I had him I had to keep going. At around 25 pounds boy did I feel it (ouch!) and I sure didn't do it again!!!

@NickNack I just remembered my mother did surgery on her shoe. She was wearing a closed-in SAS style. She marked the spot that needed relief on an older pair and cut an X so that the leather could allow room for expansion. It really gave her the relief she needed. Since it was more or less on the side of the shoe, it really wasn't that noticeable.

@NickNack You could always put a chair by the litter box and sit to change it then drag it to the garbage. I do a lot of dragging of heavy things.

If you wear heels, you might want to ask about limitations with them.
I had a different type of foot surgery and was told to stop wearing heels. Wasn’t a problem for me as I haven’t worn them in forever.

Thanks @Drythe . I started having foot problems years ago. I have flat feet, too. I quit wearing heels at that time.
