@Q-Checker My hearing aids are the over the ear type, so the only thing that goes in the ear is a little wire with a rubber tip. Not really any fitting involved to that. And the brand does matter to me because different brands vary in features and sound quality, as well as durability. But I agree with you that a qualified audiologist is most important.

Mine are the BTE style too, @shoesnbags. I tried the in the canal type way in the beginning and hated them. Fortunately I was able to exchange them. Due to my degree of loss I need more than the rubber dome tip. I wear custom made earmolds. They also get replaced when I get new aids.

That's interesting. Over the past 6 years my audiologist has changed the type of rubber tips, so I've had three different shapes. But nothing custom needed yet. Aren't we lucky to be living in a time when all of this is available!

You can say that again, @shoesnbags! Hearing loss is hereditary on one side of my family. So is stubbornness. What a combination that was and observing some of the interactions between my aunts and uncles, some refusing to admit they had a problem but there would be lots of loud conversations! 🤦‍♀️😄

One of our kids inherited hearing loss and it showed itself early on. We bought aids and they worked but someone got too cool to use them until he became an adult. He tried the cheap ones. They didn't help much and they always broke easily. We were blessed to be able to gift him a state of the art pair of aids last year and they've made such a difference for him. He sees the same audiologist as I do. My sister was too but I don't know if she still is or if she switched to someone closer to where she lives.

I'm so greatful for mine. If I'm not wearing them, my DH needs to come near, face me, and speak clear and directly. Otherwise forget it. Imagine how sad my life would be, not being able to hear the music we love so much, or to not have conversations with friends, or to not hear my family's voices or our sweet grand kids tell their stories and say "I love you, Nana". Yes, professional hearing aids are expensive but worth every penny

I could not afford $10K for hearing aids! I'm 70 and I hope I never come to a point where my hearing would need that level of hearing aids. But if it did I would have to take out a loan! Absurd.

$10,000 is the highest I've seen - 😳

Mine were right around $6800, I think, 2-3 yrs. ago. The ones we bought for DS were a little more than that - newer technology than mine. Good thing they were bought in different years! My audiologist offers a payment plan - the patient applies for credit with Wells Fargo. Interest doesn't get charged until 12 months, but monthly installments are required. If one takes longer to pay, interest is retroactive. We used the payment option once, the pair I had prior to my current ones, and it worked out fine. We made the minimum payments for ten months and paid the balance in the 11th month. It was right for our budget at the time and never any interest.

My son brought them for me because he was tired of me saying, "What"

They don't work in an outside setting as well. They make noise. They do work in a home or car when someone is speaking to you, you don't have to have them repeat. Also, they are only good for mild hearing loss.

Now, I can keep the TV on at a lower volume.

I have the Atom Pro2 also. I really like them a lot. I did notice how the wind outside makes them get noisy like a fan blowing next to your ears. But it only happens in the wind. Otherwise they're fine. I read that to get rid of the noise when you go outdoors in the wind is to change the domes to the cones rather than the mushrooms. I haven't done that b/c I'm inside mostly.
