Punctal plug in . Now eye tears all day. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Punctal plug was put in a week ago. My eye has not stopped tearing since. It is quite a nuisance.  I thought perhaps my eye needed time to adjust, thus have not made an appointment  with my doctor yet. I am going to give it a ew more days, but in the meantime was wondering if anyone experienced the same thing?  It was a simple procedure. Perhaps I need a smaller size......  Hopeful.  Would appreciate your experience.  I know mine is made of silicone.

That's what happened to me when I got them.  The tearing eventually stopped, but I don't remember how long it took.  I'm thinking it was quite a while though.  The plugs kept coming out, and so the doctor kept changing the size of them.  I think it was about the third time, and they stayed in.  I don't know if they're still there.

I use Refresh gel drops, take fish oil capsules and lutein.  All of that has helped tremendously.  I almost never need to use the drops anymore.  My eye doctor said I had extremely dry eyes.  They would get bright red anytime I would go into a closed air conditioned place like the Mall.  They don't do that anymore.  My eyes were painfully dry all the time.  I've been doing this routine for many years now, and it's definitely working.

@pggoodyThe first time I had those plugs, I also experienced terrible tearing from one eye.  Maybe I let it go too long because I ended up with pain from all the wiping.  The doctor told me my problem was that the second duct in that eye had plugged by itself -  so neither was working!!!

Eventually we did a tiny surgery, but today having been through so much with my extremely dry eyes, I know I'd try other treatments first because in the intervening 20+ years, there have been so many new products and procedures available.  My advice would be to check in with your opthalmalogist's office -  you're not being a wimp!

I've had plugs several times since then -  most times they were fine and gave me some relief, and  I wish you the same.  But do check -  not even all the doctors agree about the plugs. something I've learned in my snowbird life in which I see specialists in both places.

I have the plugs almost a year and have not had any tearing from them... My eyes still feel very dry and I use Restasis in the morning... Don't really see a difference.

@hondagirl  Restasis didn't help me either.  My eye doctor said it doesn't work for a lot of people.  I quit using it because it was expensive, and I didn't want to spend that much money on something that wasn't helping me at all.

Can I ask you what causes this dry eye?  I have never heard of plugs or such. Sounds awful☹️.

Don't see a difference since I have the plugs... Eye Dr. said dry eyes can be a sign of aging - who really knows...When the heat or AC is on I think that aggravates the eyes - meds too.

@SeaMaiden In my case probably a combination of things: allergies, living in Southern Ca.(heat and dry) , lack of sleep, extended computer use / tired eyes.   My father and brother also suffered with, but not to my extent.

It's not unusual for women to experience dry eye when they reach menopause age.

If this is for dry eye, I had a severe case of dry eye, nothing helped, I asked on this board for help and a poster recommend seabuckthorn oil. I take it internally, if I stop it will come back. I tried all the eye drops, a humidifier etc... This is the only thing that helped.
