I was originally buying Culturelle as Consumer Reports said that they tested a variety of brands and the Culturelle brand held up to the amounts stated on the package.  Costco had it the cheapest and sometimes it is on coupon I believe.

I've switched to Andrew Lessman's Ultimate Friendly Flora since.

I like them both.  No issues with either one.

Just curious - did he tell you what strength to buy?  There is such variety from low billions to 50 billion to ones labeled for seniors etc.  Again, just curious.

If you're old, do you have to take "old" bacteria?  laugh.gif

@jagk@fortune@Trudey@VaBelle35@maestra

OK I had a "probiotic" crises during the last month!  Digestive Advantage (OTC) was rx'd by my GI specialist 10 years ago... and I have been taking them faithfully for 10 years... until the last few months.

The box states that it has wheat and soy in it!  WHAT???

I am gluten sensitive and that is what wheat products are (mostly).

On Amazon, customers had reviewed this product and stated that the formula switched over to another manufacturer... and this fact was not disclosed.

It might pay to check labels in case the ingredients in products have changed.  I had to switch probiotics.

I've taken this one for years.  I can tell a difference by no longer experiencing bloating and indigestion.  Not sure if it helps, but I also eat yogurt everyday.  Not greek tho.  Don't care for that taste.

Unfortunately all the supplemental Probiotics are a waste of $

if not supported by a fiber-rich diet.

A diet with animal products & processed food/oils discourages any healthy gut flora, so it makes sense to better the diet first, then supplement, if needed.

My gastroenterologis told me that he attended a conference at a NYC medical university where they were told that probiotics have not lived up to the hype they were sold. Instead, they were told to promote EnteraGam, a powdered medication that

I am now taking...not cheap. I have no clue whether they are of any use.

@Vivian

'...they were told to promote'.....I stopped right there.

Googled this med:

The main ingredient in EnteraGam® is a specially formulated protein preparation that consists of more than 50 percent of immunoglobulin. This ingredient, serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate (SBI), is made up of beef proteins.

Are you in a clinical trial?  I see where this has only been manufactured since 2001...not enough track record where I would feel comfortable.  "Isolate" means heavily processed.  Who knows what chemicals are added.

".....not cheap":   Just those 2 little words makes me so sad.  Spending hard earned money on something that's questionable.   I do my low fat, whole food, plant based opinions for things dietary....but with your situation, I'll meet you 1/2 way.   Forget the low fat, forget the plant based...just eat whole foods.  Real food.  At least you wouldn't be spending the money for a promise.

But of course, I can't end this post without saying....the right food will heal.  Just think about the BRAT diet to heal, bananas, rice, applesauce & toast.  Add more plants, whole foods...staying away from processed foods, chemicals & animal products....and you will thrive.
