@NicksmomESQ   I also suffer from IBS and eat refrigerated sauerkraut AND probiotics AND prebiotics to manage the condition each and every day.

For me, my diet is pristine; HOWEVER when I'm stressed and emotional issues occur, my IBS flares up (like it is right now) regardless.

I comfort myself in the knowledge that I can only IMAGINE what my condiition would be like if I DIDN'T take the dietary and supplement steps I do each day.  NOT A PLEASANT THOUGHT!

@pdlinda  I'm a victim of stress too. We really have to be kinder to ourselves. The sauerkraut & probiotic help along with walking. I try to walk 25-30 minutes 5 - 7 days a week.

Costco has an Organic Sauerkraut in the refrigerated section ...really good...

Are you referring to the Wildbrine brand or something else?  I'd be happy if I could get it at my Costco again. They haven't had it for quite awhile.

@pdlinda   yes, I do know Bubbies is an active one,  it just doesn't say specifically it's organic (i.e. organic cabbage?)  I could check the website!  But it does say all natural and it is no gmo, has three simple ingredients and is yummy!  I paid $7.50 at Shoprite last week / connecticut.  Price goes up and down here - there are sales too.  Probably higher priced at the local health food stores I would guess.

Nope, I don't do sauerkraut.  It is cabbage soaked for months in an extremely salty brine.

All that salt causes other health issues, especially high blood pressure and kidney disease.  I avoid salt whenever I can.

If you have health problems, check with your doctor before you consume sauerkraut daily.

@Carmie   Nobody is recommending copious or unlimited amounts of sauerkraut. The article excerpt I shared recommended 2 Tablespoons daily, which is 1 ounce.

1 ounce of sauerkraut has 187 mg of sodium, which is 8% of the RDI on a 2,000 calorie diet.

@JeanLouiseFinch   Ohhh yes, it was critical that it be served at traditional Polish weddings...along with many other foods and traditions.  My husband won't touch it. He ate it one time at my mom's house when my kids were little and it gave him such a stomach ache he swore it off forever!!!

@NicksmomESQ   So true.  The exercise definitely helps.  I'm here in Phx so 6 mos out of the year I can't do anything outside because of the heat so I exercise inside my home.

For some people, that is too much because they also eat other items with sodium.  People with cardiac pro

blems, high blood pressure or renal issues should check with their doctor first.  These patients are told to avoid salt, but it is impossible because it is hidden in most food.

Not all sauerkraut has 187 mg of sodium per ounce. My husband has made homemade sauerkraut and whole cabbage heads brined all of his life...his family tradition.  I have personally seen all the salt it takes to make it.

If you are healthy, some salt won't hurt you, but if already have issues, it could make you worse.

I still stand by my advice to check with your physician if you have cardiac, high blood pressure or renal problems.

Why would anyone risk their health if they already have issues?  That is just plain stupid.

@Carmie Yes, of course people should check with their dr first if there is any question about safely.  However, even though it is fermented in salt, there is the position that sauerkraut may have the ability to lower blood pressure and help with cardiovascular health.

Checking the bottle of bubbies btw, it has 290 mg of sodium.

I see from reading some articles online that the sodium content varies greatly from brand to brand.

Some info. from the net:

Cabbage is a good source of potassium, that and the probiotic content may promote lower blood pressure. Sauerkraut is also a source of vitamin K2 which helps prevent calcium deposits from accumulating in arteries, a possible cause of atherosclerosis.Feb 9, 2023

May promote heart health

Probiotics such as those found in sauerkraut may also help lower blood pressure slightly in people with hypertension. People seem to achieve the best results when they take at least 10 million CFUs per day for longer than 8 week

sauerkraut is low-calorie, low-carb, and fat-free. Plus, you get some fiber, as well as vitamins A, B, C, and K, and lactic acid (more on this one later!). And although the sodium count is high compared to other nutrients, sauerkraut also delivers some potassium, which can help counter the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium (check out these other high postassium foods

Re: Probiotic or Sauerkraut

@JeanLouiseFinch  Thanks for posting this.  I have been eating sauerkraut for ages.  I buy mine at Costco as well.  Here they do not carry it over the winter months.  One of the Costco reps told me to stock up but be warned that it doesn't keep well for months.  I found if it sits for months it becomes discoloured so I won't st stocking up as I did last year.
