Re: Prepping for the dreaded Colonoscopy today

[ Edited ]

I am confused with why people dislike the prep.  Is it the taste of the prep drink, or the constant "runs" ?

It's not the taste of anything that bothers me, but the 20-35 trips to the bathroom.  After following all of the directions,  I ended up in the hospital with severe dehydration and afib.  UGH

Best wishes for smooth sailing  @KCDiva ! I have mine upcoming.
Please may I ask what is the latest prep stuff they prescribe?  My last one was 6 yrs ago and I will NEVER forget having to drink a Gallon of " Movi-prep". That stuff tastes like soap, I had to choke it all down, horrid beyond words-

PLEASE tell me the stuff now isn't as bad, or less of it is required?? ! 🙏🙏🙏

Re: Prepping for the dreaded Colonoscopy today

My dad had colon cancer at 54 and 74; he died in the hospital from a common staph infection about 3 weeks after his second surgery.

My brothers and I accept colonoscopies as a part of our lives; I have had 4 in 15 years, all with good results.  I have prepped with magnesium citrate, pills that are salt based and dropped my blood pressure, and Suprep, which is my favorite.   I keep the Suprep in the freezer, mix with white grape juice that has also been in the freezer, drink fast thru a straw, then follow with a chaser of Coke or strong sweet tea.

I eat lighter meals, no meat, 3 days before my prep.  The less food in my intestines, the fewer trips I make.   I knew I was in good shape an hour after the second bottle of laxative, went to bed and slept all night.   My surgeon has been able to examine the entire length of my colon with each test.

Re: Prepping for the dreaded Colonoscopy today

As many here know, I had myself so worked up over the prep, I kept putting off have the test done.  I finally just bit the bullet.

OMG the prep was nothing.  I was lucky that my doctor does the 4 dulcolax and then the miralax/gatorade combo so there was no drinking of that nasty liquid.  I'm not a huge gatorade fan but I had no problem drinking what I needed to drink.

Would I want to do this all the time?  No but the whole process was not anything as bad as I thought.  The worst for me was I didn't drink enough other stuff the day before and ended up dehydrated and they had a hard time putting my IV in.

I'll trade my possible knee replacement and subsequent pain, for your colonoscopy any day.  I'm signed up for that anyway here, maybe I could do them together as 1.  *wink*

Re: Prepping for the dreaded Colonoscopy today

I'm not clear on something about these procedures .... since a Cologuard test is supposed to identify about 90% of cancers with their non-invasive test, does this mean everyone who gets a colonoscopy has already had suspicious results with a Cologuard test?

The only cancer in my family was an uncle's lung cancer (a 3 pack a day smoker),  so I'm not really considered high risk, but wondered about this.  TIA

Colonoscopy is the gold standard for this kind of testing ,and it always will be. Cologuard will never replace it for accuracy and thoroughness. Doctors will never recommend Cologuard instead of colonoscopy. It is more for those that refuse to have colonoscopy since it is better than nothing at all.  It gives a lot of false results. If you want 100% accurate results and removal of any suspicious growths, Cologuard is not the answer.
