My aunt had shingles a total of at least 4 times from early adolescence until her seventies, and after the third attack, was tormented by postherpetic neuralgia.

 

The best result she got for pain relief was a cream prescribed by her physician. There was no medicine taken by mouth that could touch thee pain, at least for her.
