The California Senate unanimously passed a bill to offer plant-based meals as an option to patients in hospitals and prisoners in prisons.
Now it's going to the Assembly.
Supporters are hopeful that this means lawmakers also see health and life benefits of plant-based eating.
I hope this post is not seen as political, but health and wellness.

I live in California and think this is a great idea, these institutions are used to preparing special meals for religious or health reasons.

Good for California. The hospitals here serve prepared foods with little nutritional value. Some hospitals have McDonalds and Burger King on hospital grounds.

I live in California but did not know they were offering fast food.
I hope the legislation is another step on the long road to supporting health.

Wow.
This is huge!
I automatically think of recovery meals...for those having surgeries
like heart issues, etc. If they didn’t eat PB before, maybe they can
leave with ways to prevent coming back! Education & an example
of how PB meals can be made.
Hopefully the PB mindset will parlay over to prevention work.
With the AMA involved, maybe their program/recommendations
will change. It’s start!
I know Dr. John McDougall has retired from his day-to-day practice
and will be actively involved with legislation issues, like this, so
hooefully we will see more & more changes!
California is leading the nation by acting on the American Medical Association and the American College of Cardiology recommendations for plant-based meals,” says Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., director of nutrition education for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. “Providing plant-based meals won’t just help patients and prisoners fight obesity, diabetes, and heart disease; it could save hospitals and prisons thousands of dollars a year.”

I live for the day physicians regularly promote prevention, @sidsmom
I know some do, but I think many are still treating symptoms.

Sounds like a good deal, I guess. Unless my many long hospital stays required "clear liquids only", what I ate was my choice, not that of any of the hospitals in which I spent days. Though I am not fixated on plant based, I quit eating meat/fish and fowl, over 45 years ago.
Prisoners? That would put this thread into something completely different for me.

The state I live in and other states have had McDonald’s and Burger King.

This really is great news and I hope (and really do believe!) that this trend will just continue to grow!
