Plant-based News:

The 2 ladies/2 dogs who were recently found stranded at sea?

“All four looked remarkably fit, and Appel credited that to veteran sailors who had warned them to prepare well for the voyage. They had packed enough food for a year, mostly dried goods like oatmeal and pasta.”

They ran out of dog food, so the oatmeal/pasta became food for

the dogs, as well.  And they were ‘in good spirits’ and appears to not

be starving...and getting plenty of protein & vitamins.  =Smiley Tongue

Oatmeal & pasta, not just for the win, but for total survival, as well!

Whoa, doggies, my guacamole came out so awesome I have to get it to the party before I eat it all myself!

Just wanted to say it's maybe my best batch EVER!

@sidsmom

I have a very basic question for you.

How often to you eat pasta?

I'm looking at the Jovial brown rice pasta as mentioned here.

It would make things simple for me in the beginning if I used this as a baseline product to mix vegetables with.

I know it is more complex than just that, but since I've avoiced white carbs for a long time, I was just curious.

Thanks?

Hi, Witchy Woman.  Obviously I am not @sidsmom, but I just thought I'd give my thoughts as I had mentioned the Jovial brown rice pasta, but I also mentioned that I thought in the beginning that you should really eliminate ALL flours, even those made from a whole source, like brown rice.

I actually ate more of it in the very beginning (I'm still a beginner!), maybe 3 times a week.  Now that I've found how easy (and delicious) to work with beans, lentils, potatoes, and the like, I find I'm not eating it more than maybe once every 2 weeks.

Flours of any kind are still more calorically dense than a comparable amount of the beans, legumes, potatoes, etc. etc.

Just my 2 cents.  I'm sure @sidsmom will have more to offer on this topic!

I wish you the best on this journey and hope you don't mind my butting in Cat LOL

My guacamole disappeared in short order and I was informed by a couple party goers that I didn't make enough.

I think that means they liked it!

So easy to make  - only avocado, red onion, jalapeno, cilantro and lime juice.

BADA BOOM!

Of course I don't mind you resonding.  Your thinking was really what I was thinking.  I don't want to lean too heavily on any pasta product as I can go overboard quickly.  I just have to readjust my thinking.

In my youth, I was vegetarian and didn't worry about vitamin supplementation.  I realize now I need to rethink that, although over the years, I started eating fish and chicken, so not really vegetarian anymore.

In the last few years, I realized I wanted to go back and have tried unsuccessfully to do so. I always miss the protein and I'm just lazy about finding good substitutes.

While I am not a big person, it wouldn't hurt me to lose 10 pounds or so, but that isn't my main motivation.

It is a journey, I know. I've just got to start doing it! I did explore the Forks over Knives website, and may opt to get some meal planning help.

Kitty’s right...it is more calorie dense, but it does straddle the line.

It’s a ‘don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater’ bit.

If pasta meals edge out the meat/dairy/eggs/oil, that’s good.

But if you have weight to lose & those pasta meals aren’t satisfying,

pasta needs to be an occasional food..maybe once every 1-2 weeks.

Currently, that’s where I stand, every 1-2 weeks, usually in a soup which

freezes well. To sit down with a plate of pasta? Man, it’s been awhile. I’ve

discovered those pasta-only meals were a huge ‘trigger food’ for me, but

being a ‘better bad’, at the beginning, it edged out those meaty meals I

thought I needed to lose weight.  Pasta is cheap, easy & readily

available...but on the other hand, it’s cheap, easy & readily available, y’know? Ha!

You’ll probably come to find...those veggies/sauces (fat free!)/spices

which are reminisant to your old pasta dishes can be made w/ other

starch bases & still will be satisfying & comforting as you remember.

The ‘taste of Italian’ will still taste good over brown rice or baked

potatoes.  And that goes with any cuisine.

Since being vegetarian years ago, you know how to do this, girlie!

You’re off to a good reset with the FOK website. If you’re a book person,

‘Starch Solution’ really breaks everything down...really can’t recommend

any of McDougall’s work enough. There’s a bucketload of inspiration out

there today w/ YouTube, FB pages, blogs...really gets the word out.

You’ll find it so much easier than years past.

Plus, watch your wallet grow! Cheap eating at its best.

Oh, wow, you just reminded me of one of my favorite meals long ago, WAY before going WFPB, which was a baked potato with and onion, peppers, garlic and tomato sauce topping.  Delish!   I will have to resurrect that, albeit minus the oil!

Thanks for the reminder Cat Happy

Oh that sounds so good! I love guacamole! I bought a jicama today which might prove to be a good dipping stick!

Last night at dinner a friend who is a veggie confirmed that nutritional yeast is a good replacement for cheese, so I planned to pick some up today.  All I could find at the grocery store was a bag which cost $9.79 and I thought it would be more responsible to buy a smaller bag--in case I don't like it.  On the way home I turned into the Trader Joe's parking lot, but everybody and their brother happened to be there. I drove around twice and couldn't find an open spot, so experimenting with nutritional yeast is still on my bucket list! Hopefully the parking lot won't be so crowded tomorrow afternoon.
