I want to buy a portable net / paddles etc
I’ve never played but my husband plays tennis and I thought this would be a nice surprise
What paddles do you own? Different prices, since were novices I don’t want to break bank.

At the risk of sounding dumb, what in the name of Great Caesars Ghost is pickleball?

Prices are relative so you'd need to decide what's reasonable.  Husband paid around $80 for each of his paddles a few years ago at Pickleball Central in Kent, WA.  They have a website you can check out.

I played tennis for many years including singles, doubles and round robins. In all honesty pickleball was not for me or my tennis group. Before you put out a lot of money for a surprise, you might want to ask hubby if this would interest him.

It’s mainly for the family to enjoy during quarantine (we’ve enjoyed badminton in past)
Since he likes racquet sports but probably won’t be a total cure for his courts being closed
Pickleball is similar to tennis with different court paddles rules
Less strenuous than tennis from what I’ve observed (which I like)
