Re: Pain In Arm 1 Week Following Flu Shot & Tetanus Injection

This year I had the Xstrong Flu shot in one arm and the Prevnar 13 in the other arm... and I've had the flu shots every year and a pneumonia shot every 5 years ince 1995 with very little reaction at all.... and the Flu shot in my left arm was awful.... the Prevnar hurt too, but it was the super Flu shot that took about two weeks for the muscles to feel normal again......  I think the nurse really nailed my muscles.

I agree with what others have said, the Tetanus is an awful shot.....

I believe the 'rusty nail' tale started because a barn was a place where people were likely to step on a rusty nail.

It wasn't the rust that got ya, it was the lovely microbes living in the barn with the livestock.

The nail puncture provided the entry way for the tetanus pathogen.

Doc told me that years ago.

Even if you step on a rusty nail in a barn, there still have to be a series of conditions for tetanus infection to set in (as so I learned).  There is a strong likelihood for several types of infection but tetanus is not near the top of a LONG list.

If you read up on the tetanus bacteria it is interesting!

I'll have to check that out. They are still real sticklers here about giving tetanus shots.

Cuts, and especially puncture wounds, that happen near animals, or where you are exposed to human waste will have them checking your records.

If you don't have a record of your last shot, or if you're close to the 10yr date, you're going to be getting a shot.

I'm going to read up on it. Maybe they are using outdated standards to make sure to cover themselves. If you get sick and weren't offered the shot... People sue so much these days.

Thanks for the info.

It finally dawned on me that that was the same side I had the tetanus shot, so I googled it. Others also had similar painful reactions, so I wasn't dying, lol.  It was awful. I used warm compresses for almost a week until it finally started to go away.

I had a very bad (definitely worse than the norm, which is bad anyway) reaction to a tetanus shot in my early 20s and have avoided them for many years. I had one doctor’s office agree to give me a split dose (two visits) and that was fine. But since then, no one will do that. When working I could have gotten a DPT booster (they were worried about whooping cough - still are) but they don’t/can’t separate the vaccines, it’s DPT or nothing. I’ve also asked at various doctors’ offices if they would do split dose and they said no.

I know I should have one again, but I’m NOT looking forward to the reaction I had before.

Wonder if you could get 2 baby DPTs? I'm assuming babies aren't given as much of the serum, don't know though.

I got my last routine tetanus shot in 1994, it kept me awake for about 5 nights straight. I have refused one ever since. I never get a flu shot.

Re: Pain In Arm 1 Week Following Flu Shot & Tetanus Injection

Ever since I was a kid, I've had quite a bit of pain & redness associated with vaccinations of any type.  As an adult, somehow it was always painful, and many times I ended up bumping my arm against something and then it hurt even more!

So .....   I did the logical thing (for me) .... I now get everything in my hip.  Out of sight is out of mind.   It started when I got a series of B-12 shots in my butt/hip and they didn't hurt at all.    I got a tetanus shot last year and didn't even feel it afterwards .... at all ....

@Moonchilde

Yes, they seperate the DTaP vaccine.  Your doc office is just being difficult.

When my PCP told me I was due for my tetanus vac and I told her much I hate it because I my reaction, she was horrified and told me that is not acceptable and not a good sign.  She advised me to consult with a specialist I know and that's what got the ball rolling......

Every doc I spoke to was like, "why would you continue to get a vac that is giving you such an adverse reaction??"

I'm careful about getting elective injections.  Never two at the same time.

I'm definitey not going to forget that reaction.  The only reason I had agreed to the shot was because I injured my foot and my big toenail tore off. I had to walk through a muddy area, and then through their parking lot in my bare foot with the open wound, which concerned them.  That, along with being a diabetic, they didn't want to take any chances with any kind of infection in my foot area.

Next time around, I'll ask if there are any alternatives in either dosing or injection sites, however. That reaction was unbearable.

Hi, @BunSnoop.  I'm sorry you've been in such pain.  I know someone who had a similar reaction to what you're describing.  I would look into something called "Frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis."  It's not common with regards to vaccinations, but it can occur.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

Re: Pain In Arm 1 Week Following Flu Shot & Tetanus Injection

@BunSnoop

Oh yes, I had pain after a Pneumo vax shot in Oct. Got the stronger flu shot in the other arm at the same time.

Never have I had this type of reaction...painful and swollen arm. Very, very elevated white count/fever 103.

I will always look back and think I was infected with something else a few days before getting the shots. Maybe like a bad flu, since every single bone/muscle in my body hurt.
