Overtime rules in playoffs

The announcer on our local sports station was talking about the new playoff rules in overtime games. If a team scores a field goal in overtime, the game doesn't end. The ball automaticallly goes to the other team to give them a chance. However, if a touchdown is scored, then the game ends.

Example: if Vinatieri should kick a field goal in overtime for the Colts, the the Jets get the ball to try to score. But if Manning throws a touchdown instead, then it's over.

I think the idea behind it is to give both teams an even chance. But if both teams should score field goals, then the game could last longer. They would have to play until a touchdown was scored. This rule could change the way defenses are coordinated. or whoever decides to get the ball first. Could be interesting to see what effect, if any, this rule would have in the playoffs.
